Jr Roberts Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 This is a model of Jim Lytle's Quad Al dragster from the mid 1960's that i just finished custom building. The model has (4) V1710 Allison air plane engines, I Chopped the Fiat body, Custom built chassis and drive train, Including some misc. parts from the Revell Tommy Ivo Showboat dragster & The Revell Mickey Thompson Challenger 1 salt flats race car. I saw the original car last year at a car show and it blew me away, So i had to recreate one for myself. There was a magazine article in the October 1965 Rod & Custom magazine that helped with the reference's in building this wild dragster. There are also some misc. articles on the web. I started the build in May 2021 and just finished today (January 30, 2022). I tried to wire & plumb it accordingly. Thanks for looking, Jr. Roberts 3
TECHMAN Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 (edited) ??? GREAT JOB replicating a very complex old racecar!!!! Awesome detailing too!!! DJ Edited January 30, 2022 by TECHMAN spelling
cobraman Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 What a beast ! Fantastic work ! I don't think I would want to try and drive that !
TarheelRick Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Beautiful work of an amazing piece of nostalgic history. Just have to believe the torque-steer on that front drive axle would be overwhelming. One thing I would like to mention is that you may should have switched the exhaust manifolds from side to side on the two front engines to allow the openings to point toward the rear. Still, some very masterful modeling.
Jr Roberts Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 Hi TarheelRick, Thank you for the compliments on Quad AL, I decided to make the front exhaust point forward as the carburetors are in the middle, Unlike the real one i was thinking of a fire hazard. I forgot to mention there are 96 exhaust pipes (i ordered these 4 at a time from Shapeways 3 D printing). Thanks again to everyone for the kind words. Jr. Roberts
misterNNL Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 IIRC the 1:1 version of this was strictly a show car and never actually ran.
thatz4u Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 The kind of unusual build that I like.....I've built some weird vehicles myself...
Ian McLaren Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 Simply increadable, both the model and the real car. A great recreation that really captures the feeling of the actual car as well as a good dose of the lunacy involved LOL. A very ambitious project well done. Hard to believe they are making close to the same horsepower now with only 8 cylinders and 500 cubic inches.
89AKurt Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 Admire your drive to build that crazy machine! Love it. ❤️
TransAmMike Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 Whoa, thats Crrrrrazy!!!!! Impressive work Roland?
ea0863 Posted February 14, 2022 Posted February 14, 2022 Fantastic job! I'm thinking of dropping one Allison motor into a Model A roadster and was thinking that was going to be tough enough!
bobthehobbyguy Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Nicely done. Impressive work. Its a shame the car was never run it would have been a mini blowing sound.
M W Elky Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Wow it’s just so mad cool.what a great use of those old Allison’s . then there’s that expertly cut down fiat body, and that sweet heavy metal flake blue.yea all is right with the world.
Claude Thibodeau Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Hi Roland! This is very impressive, not just by the sheer nature of the beast, but your meticulous recreation is world class. Bravo! Now... Just how such a car could leave the line without smoking the tires for the full 1320 is beyond me! CT
Mattilacken Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Wow! That’s insane! Both the original as well as the model is insane! Great work!
BGK1986 Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 Great model! I was wondering where you saw the Quad Al in person and whether you have the contact info for the owner? I'd love to see this beast in person myself.

Lobo2me Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 What a beast! Miles of plug wires and all 96 exhaust pipes. Where did you source the motors? Great job!
paul alflen Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 MisterNNL ,IIRC, I think someone said this car actually ran in the movie"Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" from 1959. I haven't watched it yet on U-tube.
