What type of Tamiya paint? They do about 6-7 different types in the range XF acrylics are flat while the AS series are flat or semi gloss. There is enamel, LP lacquer and rattle can lacquer.

You took the words right out of my mouth.  There are many "flavors" of Tamiya paints.

X is for gloss or semi gloss.  XF is for flat.  TS both semi gloss & gloss is there lacquer in the can.  LP is there lacquer in the bottles like X/XF.  AS is mainly for aircraft.  There enamel line up is X for gloss or semi gloss and XF for flat etc .

just looking for a high gloss

So then you have the acrylics and enamels with the X only code. (The F means flat) All soild color TS cans, the metallics require a clear coat (TS-13)

Im not familiar with their LP line but the description should say weather it’s gloss, metallic or flat.

Avoid the PS cans as they are designed for RC cars and to flex without cracking.

Are you asking about spray cans or paints for airbrushing ?

spray cans

OK then I have to let someone else reply to that question since I use both acrylic and lacquer but for airbrushing. So it's the bottled paint not spray cans.

Making the subject line a bit more informative might attract more members who actually use those paints to chime in.  "Tamiya paint" seems too nebulous.

You should be able to edit the subject line. Something like "Do Tamiya TS spray paints produce glossy finish?".  Now that is a subject line you can really bite into.

I have not used the TS spray lacquers but I've seen plenty of models painted with those paints in the WIP and Under Glass sections.  If you could attract those members to open this thread, you would get the answers you are seeking.

Tamiya TS orange straight from the can.

When I get back to this build I will use a clear coat and polish before calling it finished. I dont use many solid colours so this is the only example I have.

Here is the original issue kit that I used to build mine.

Revell 1/25 Porsche 914, H1317

It has recently been reissued as this.

I doubt it's the plastic causing you to get orange peel.  Base coat only as good as your primer coat.  How good is your primer coat? Does it be rough? is it nice and smooth? Laying a top coat without orange peel especially with a can takes practice and skill something you probably had 20 years ago but lost 20 years later.  Sometimes orange peel happens - it happens to everyone, but we don't throw in the towel and quit.  If we want to get rid of the orange peel and have a show room quality car body 80% of the time you have to put in the extra work and put those elbows to use.   Usually my orange peel comes from the clear coat and not the color coat.

You reside in a very humid region -- have you always lived there?

You're not going to find a spray paint that comes out perfectly smooth out of the can. Twenty years ago, enamel paints would come out fairly smooth. But, never perfectly smooth. It's just not gonna happen. If you want a nice paint job, you're gonna have to work for it. Especially, if you're using spray cans. You might accomplish it with an airbrush. But, that's a whole nother animal and headache. Also, if you've not painted any models in twenty years, you're going to have to reacquire your skills. I had to when I missed around eighteen months.

I have used a lot of the Tamiya TS paint over the last year.  It's a synthetic lacquer that cures pretty quick.  I use TS-13 Clear Gloss and Rust-Oleum Crystral clear lacquer for the clear coat.  I have trouble with orange peel at times with both paint & clear and a BIG contributing factor for me is Humidity.  I have yet to get a mirror type finish with Tamiya paints, but it can be done.  Cool Hand (Luke) is the fellow to talk to as he has the Tamiya TS paint down pat.  The pics are of his 1950 Oldsmobile.  Maybe Luke with chime in to give his 2 cents worth.

That's beautiful! These cars are right up my ally.  Looks like he put a nice set of pegasus lowrider rims and tires on it.
