Won’t have a lot of time to spend on this one yet due to an up coming vacation but want to get some of the small stuff underway . First will be trying to do something with the metal wheels . I will replace them with some printed ones if I can’t get these to a point I can live with . It will give ma a chance to figure out a color .  I doubt I can safe these decals ? so I will probably do Cobra style twin stripes that I will paint on. There is a upper fender light I will need to address.

I had one of these that I re-homed. I did make a scan of the black decals. If you have a way to print a new set, they are definitely in better shape than yours.

I have this kit too. Or, is it a 1/24?

It’s 1/12.  Here is one version I have never see in person.

Grabber green metallic would be really cool but you would probably have to spend $40 on a large spray can made for touch up.  There was one 429 exported to Japan and it had the fender side markers added as required by Japanese law.   It’s a shame about the decals.  I’ve seen these police decals on Ebay but it’s doubtful there was ever a real car used by LA county.  I have to laugh about the 455HO decals - perhaps they are meant for a TransAm.  There was a 73 Mustang used in Japan for police duty perhaps to catch those GI’s that imported muscle cars while stationed there.  There are some differences from the 71 (grille and wheels mainly) plus of course all those Japanese words you would have to hand paint.  The picture is of a 1/18 diecast.  I look forward to seeing what direction you go with this one.  I built one in the mid 80’s but it broke apart and I bought the “newer” versions with the chrome plated wheels.

I do like that green.

After this one if you get the urge to do something different in a smaller scale here’s the Testors Mach1/Boss metal body kit that I converted into the police version.  The Japanese writing was hand painted.

I think I want that green. Where would the best place to order it be if you know ? Thanks

Testors makes a metallic green spray which I have used on a few builds that is pretty close.  Automotivetouchup.com and touchupdirect.com sells large size cans of the original Ford color.  I have bought some other colors from automotivetouchup.com nad was pleased with the results.  I painted the green fastback with the Testors metallic green.

Thanks !  Your very helpful . That’s where I ordered my paint . You were right on the price . 39.00 delivered . Should get in about two weeks . That should be about the time I am able to dig in to this kit better .

Good luck with this kit! I have it too and I am going a different route than stock since I'm not a fan of the liberties they took to be able to have the kit be motorized.

Ray...I have this kit in my stash too. Took a look at it yesterday.  Mine was bought used and started...so no decals. Luckily most of what was done is minor.  I have the same kit in two other scales so I will probably paint mine to match. I will also probably cut the side stripes from vinyl tape if i decide to even go that way. Have to take a look at the other two kits which i think are already painted.  Will follow your WIP

Do a test to see which clear coat works best.

If it's from Automotive Touchup, I have used Rustoleum's Wheel Clear Coat with great results.

Never thought about doing that Andrew but I will try and get that done today.

Makes you wonder which real car they used to come up with the kit.  How many 429 Mach1’s made it over to Japan?  Answer is at least one.  Looking forward to the build Ray.  I wish I was as motivated as you in cranking out nice builds.

Check with kenny@kennyterry.com.  He made me some 72 Mach1 decals in 1/25 long before the Round2 “AMT” Mach1 kits came out so perhaps he has the art work and could resize them to 1/12.

Well. They tried

you’ve got something to start with - and this is bound to be the only large scale ‘71 Mustang you’ll find ..
