Revell/Model King Hawaiian Charger in 1/16

I just finished this one.  This is the 1996 re-release of the Revell original.  I built it box stock in that NO aftermarket parts were used.  I did make a few modifications to get the stance the way I wanted it and to get the body to set down properly on the chassis.  My biggest disappointment is the way the decals turned out.  Unfortunately, several of the decals (primarily the white ones) never cleared up well, despite several applications of setting fluid.  The decals are 26 yrs. old, so it is what it is, but it is disappointing to me.  

The body, chassis and chassis tins are painted with Tamiya TS-89 Pearl Blue over Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal.  Interior tins are Testors Aluminum.

Really nice job the color looks spot on.  I see what you mean about the decals. I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times, and I don’t know what the remade is. It really sucks when you have a dark color, and one set of decals.

Yeah...and I've not found anyone that makes aftermarket decals for this car, so I'm kinda stuck!

Nice looking box stock build.  Too bad about the decals, old decals are such a pain to work with.  To get those large side panel decals on without any major rips is impressive, especially for their age.  Usually they seem to get more brittle with age.

Thank you for the kind words.  I'll be honest....I held my breath the whole time I was putting those big decals on.  I expected them to tear at any moment!  I used almost a quarter bottle of MicroSol on just those two decals to get in an attempt to keep them soft and pliable, but you just never know.  I got lucky and I know it!!  As I noted on another comment, I had (and continue to) search(ed) for after market decals for this car, but they just don't exist at the present time.

I feel your pain on the “old decals over dark paint” challenges. I’ve been able to minimize this a few times by 1) removing all the decal adhesive from the old decal after wetting and separating it from the paper backing by rubbing it off with a soft paint brush and water and then 2) applying a thin mixture of Micro Set (blue bottle) and white glue between the decal and paint to provide adhesion and fill voids to prevent ghosting. If you use this method, be sure to remove any excess MS-white glue from the decal area before it sets up, otherwise it will leave a un-glossy film.

Thank you for the kind words and for the suggestion.  Your suggestions is a procedure that I have never seen before.  I was very concerned about the age of the decals, particularly the large ones for the sides and used copious amounts of Micro Sol to keep them pliable, and then used Micro Set on all the decals (again because I was concerned with the age and how well they would settle) but I never thought about removing the original glue.  Thanks for the idea for the future!

Very nice looking model! You got the stance right and the entire model is very clean looking. Yes, the decals can be a real disappointment after you put in all that good work. As the others have said, I've had it happen too.
