Oldcarfan27 Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Beautiful boats. Probably the best way to build a scale version of one of these curve monsters would be to do a plank on frame design, just like the originals. Plastic would be sturdier, but wood strips would look way cool! 1
TransAmMike Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Oh yeah, some fantastic looking boats and you model will look great.Kit!! 1
Paul Payne Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Absolutely gorgeous, every one! More pics of the build when you get a minute! 1

espo Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 The wood boats of old are without a question a sight to behold. For those with an interest there is a Concours d'Elegance for wooden boats at Lake Tahoe on 8/12/22. I have attended in the past when I lived in Sacramento and it was a great one-day outing. I suggest anyone interested to look up the show and the pictures of past shows as well. 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 How about a hydrofoil? Or something a little less radical, by McLaren designer Frank Stephenson? 3
espo Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 The Concours can also be found on YTube. How about a 50' boat built in the '30's with twin 12-cylinder aircraft engines with over 1000 hp each with a stainless-steel roof that is still in operation. 1
ATHU Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Beautiful vintage boats in this thread. Here's a Riva Tritone. 3

BlackSheep214 Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Very cool! What’s not to like about those vintage boats? I came across plans for a boat to build from my dad. I believe it’s the same boat he and his dad built back in the 50s before he went in the Navy. 1
A modeler named mike Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 I Love the old wooden boats. Being a cabinet maker for about 30 years I appreciate wooden anything! Not quite the same as the boats pictured but my dad had a 28' wooden Trojan cabin cruiser with a single screw, 318 Chrysler engine. It had teak wood for the decking. It was a fun boat but man every winter we had to dry dock her inorder to scrap the barnacles and repaint her bottom.. I wish I had pictures to show. If I come across any I'll come back and post them. 1
Scott Colmer Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 Great thread. Stunning boats. A Chris Craft is on my lottery wish list. There is a good youtube video on the history of the company. 2
atomicholiday Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 (edited) My dad picked up this one last summer. 1958 Lyman 18’. It has a little interesting history behind it. The original owner bought it for his wife. She took one look at it and said “what do I want that for?” So the guy put it in his barn and there it sat. For 63 years. Two years ago it was purchased and restored. Then last year my dad bought it. It had NEVER been put in the water! Dad debated what to do with it, but after much thought, he decided it was a shame not to put it in and enjoy it for its intended purpose. Good choice. Taking it home. There's my dad, proud new owner. First time it ever saw water. At this point we just floated it on the trailer to see how much water it was going to take on. Very little actually. Considering it’s age, I thought it would take on more. … and here she is at her new home. Edited October 29, 2023 by atomicholiday 3
SSNJim Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Timely post. I was in Chestertown, MD this weekend for the Sultana Downrigging Festival. Lots of sailing vessels up to maybe 250 feet you can tour or sail in. There's a display of these wooden speedboats dating back to 1904, all beautifully built and crafted. I didn't take any pictures. 1
espo Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I have owned a few fiberglass hull boats in the past but have always admired wooden boats and always liked their appearance. 1
