cobraman Posted August 31, 2022 Author Posted August 31, 2022 Got the KA aftermarket seats yesterday . Not impressed for the cost . Just finished drilling out the 216 holes . Will soak before priming and painting . Then the grommets ! Fun ! Quote
cobraman Posted August 31, 2022 Author Posted August 31, 2022 Finally at the point where I could install the engine . Some suspension work and frame bracing also done . 1 Quote
majel Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 This is coming along nicely Ray! The engine looks really good in place, and in sure that was quite a pain drilling out all those holes. That's when you really hope the end result is worth all the work. I have a feeling they're going to look great! Quote
cobraman Posted September 1, 2022 Author Posted September 1, 2022 Thank you Jim. Not looking forward to placing those grommets but it can't be all fun. Quote
cobraman Posted September 3, 2022 Author Posted September 3, 2022 Placed some body panels on to have a look see . 1 Quote
cobraman Posted September 4, 2022 Author Posted September 4, 2022 So I bought these what I consider expensive resin seats for this car thinking that would be a nice detail . They come with these self stick metal rings to use as the grommets . I got 6 on in a half hour and they were not that straight ( my fault ). Anyway at 71 and fat fingers I gave it up . Seats will be just all black . Oh well I tried . Quote

I think I was planning all along to paint the grommets molded in the seats with a Molotow pen as the center of the holes look too small on the KA metal pieces. cobraman Posted September 4, 2022 Author Posted September 4, 2022 I tried that next. I was too sloppy. The folks that may see it at my house won't know the difference anyway. Quote
cobraman Posted September 5, 2022 Author Posted September 5, 2022 I have the interior pretty much done . I wish I could have made the metal seat grommets work but I could not . They are very small and my fingers are not . Also my age and eyesight hampered me . I did one row across which is 6 grommets and it took a half hour and did not look that good . So as you can see I went with straight black . 1 Quote
cobraman Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 Finished some chassis work . 1 Quote
iBorg Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Could you use something like a piece of 1/16 brass rod as a guide through the holes? Quote

Expand That actually a great idea and I think would have helped I believe . I’m fortunately I am way past that I don’t want to remove seats and seatbelts to try . Pretty sure I would make a mess . I do thank you however . Quote
cobraman Posted September 16, 2022 Author Posted September 16, 2022 The fit of this kit is fighting me . Could be me as much as the kit to be honest . I never have luck with opening body parts . I had to remove the pins that are supposed to let the front hinge . I had to remove them to get it to even fit this good ( bad ). Maybe the rear will fit better ? Quote
absmiami Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Hate to say it Cman - i think the 50 year old 25th sc IMC GT40 kit i just got is better engineered … 1 Quote

However, you would think kits regardless of scale would have gotten dramatically better by now. Quote
absmiami Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 My theory is that the expense of tooling is such that design errors simply are not corrected due to the initial investment in the first tools …. Which is why the MFH large scale kits are expensive but maybe worth it - and their use of wh metal panels allows body assembly with the ability of the builder to tweek the fit and nail the gaps … Quote
absmiami Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 MFH wiill some day do a series of GT40’s - and they will be killer .. 1 Quote
jaymcminn Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 I probably spent the first 40 hours on my Trumpeter GT40 test-fitting and correcting the panel fit. It's my usual procedure when it comes to large-scale kits with opening panels. I still ran into issues when I got to the final assembly stage. It's not the worst-engineered kit I've ever built, but it's definitely in the top 5. If they hadn't nailed the overall look so well it wouldn't be worth it. Quote
cobraman Posted September 17, 2022 Author Posted September 17, 2022 Does anyone know why they decided not to include a distributor in this kit ? Quote

Expand My guess is if they could not see it then it did not exist in their minds. Given the origin of these kits which I assume are developed by people that perhaps have never seen a real GT40 it’s not surprising. Of course the alternative is a smaller scale Japanese kit with a very accurate body with no engine to speak of or the MENG kit that cost 2-3 as much and as they say you get what you pay for.I’d have to look at my Trumpeter kit but I’m pretty sure I raided my Otaki 1/12 Mach1 for the distributor and had some resin copies to use for the GT40. cobraman Posted September 18, 2022 Author Posted September 18, 2022 I purchased the pre painted Meng 1:12 GT 40 but I sold it to help finance the purchase of a Agoura 1/8 Shelby Cobra . Have not started that yet . 1 Quote
