OldNYJim Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I was listening to an online discussion between some artists today, and they were discussion the importance of presentation. Buy the nice leather-bound sketchbook not the cheap kind, use frames that elevate and compliment your work etcetera etcetera. Then, this evening I saw THIS really beautifully done base on a Ferrari build - matching leather, nice engraved plaque and so on: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cinft1bjZfI/?igshid=YzA2ZDJiZGQ= I’d love to see more examples of how other people are ‘framing’ their builds - anyone else here do anything like this? Would love to see it if you do! I have at least a couple of kits in my collection that come with bases and stands too - the Uncertain T has a really nice base with stanchions and rope, and I have at least one Round 2 kit with those dangerous (for the model) revolving turntables powered by a rubber band. Oh, and Scale Motorsports (I think?) made those really nice stands with mirrors and plastic supports. Lets see what you got! (Apologies if this is in the wrong section, mods…this seemed general enough to be ‘general’?)
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) I've used some dollhouse brick that could be paving stones in 1/24-1/25, mounted on a board in a picture frame... Edited September 18, 2022 by Ace-Garageguy 2
jaymcminn Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I'm a big fan of acrylic display stands to add dimension and space to my display cabinets. The effect can be almost like the cars are floating in midair. For some builds I really like I have a few small display cases scattered around the house...these get swapped out from time to time. Everywhere I go in my home I get to look at the models I've produced over the years. It's a good feeling! 3

Do you recall who makes the little freestanding red case? I want one!

It's called "Fabrikor". 1
Ulf Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 I work from time to time with this one, which is meant to be general because I only have room for one car in the cabinet. The fact that the car is on a black or at least dark gray surface makes the model look more like a car and not a model. 2

The name Fabrikör an older Swedish professional title for a person who owns, manages or operates a factory. ? Edited September 21, 2022 by Ulf 2

I've been wanting a couple of these from there too: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/detolf-glass-door-cabinet-black-brown-10119206/
lordairgtar Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 Mine are kept in a case much like seen above by you guys. I was wondering too how you display at shows? I see a lot of childish things at shows like a model placed on top of a platform filled with marbles or a car setting on top of dice. I prefer to see them displayed on a small bit of street not much larger than the model itself much like aircraft guys display a plane on a patch of runway. Cars don't sit on top of marbles or dice in the real world. Mirrors are OK to display the under carriage.

I saw some AMAZING displays today, as it happens… Aside from revolving, this one had custom-machined LED spotlights plus a printed vinyl wrap to match the model: This one was even more complex, with routed pieces to support the model and some clever routing to hide the wiring for the lights: Simple, but effective: I think this is the stand that Scale Motorsports sells (sold?) And even just something simple like this ‘frames’ a model nicely, I think: 1
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 I've used lids from metal containers for bases a couple of times....painted up to simulate asphalt...not very fancy... -RRR 2
vintagerpm Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 Although I'm more likely to add "ground work" to a base when I build armor, I also do it occasionally with my car models. 2
1930fordpickup Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 Even foam board sprayed with a textured paint helps the look of a model while displaying it or just for you to get a look at it. You can have a few different colors to use and they are cheaper than others. As far as your house display goes, I am not sure how that would work. 1

The two first stands, although complex, resemble stands and displays at car shows like World Of Wheels.
JJ Deuce Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 Here are a few I've made just for the shelf. The first two are just wood plaques from the craft store, with glue and sand applied (per the Ken Hamilton technique). I painted a few shades of gray and black on one to look like asphalt, and the other, I added some small rock and diorama grass, along with some stray brush fibers to make weeds. The larger one was an extra shelf from an Ikea cabinet. I painted it black and used plaster to cast the sidewalk. I scored the pattern with an old #11 blade, and then painted the sidewalk with craft paint. The asphalt is just white glue and a couple different colors of sand. 2
stitchdup Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 These are just dried dirt, small rocks from the carpark, dried white moss (get it from a florists and can be painted with very thin kids paints or water colours) and some torn up grass matting from a model railway place. The roadway is built up using auto filler, the rocks are held with superglue and only the dirt track was painted using humbrol enamels, then the dried dirt was ground into the still tacky paint. Neither took much over half an hour to build. both are just the paperboard bottom off a broken drawer. If i do another I'll use slightly heavier board for the base as the filler warped them when it went off. 2
keyser Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 Escort Mk1 ftw. Nice weathering on both posts above. 1
