I finally finished this one, fought me every step of the way.  Came in a Testors box but obviously a reboxed Heller kit with all that implies.  The hardest part was the rear engine/suspension and the headers-20 pieces alone.  Very detailed and true to scale, thus very delicate!  Picked up the livery from Indycals as I wanted to do a Ferrari in other than red.

Anyways, thanks for looking, comments always welcome.

That's a nice clean build Bruce. I know what you mean by delicate, I built mine around 30 years ago and remember it well.

That's a very nice build on a tough ,kit Bruce.  Well done. Just curious though..did Penske run a 512S before they converted one into a 512M

I seem to recall Penske's M started life as an S then he upgraded it.  I don't think the S was ever raced in Penske's iconic blue livery.

They thought they were getting an M but the factory delivered a well worn S. They made their own body, so the Penske 512M doesn't actually match any other 512M. Penske never fielded it as a 512S.

Congrats Bruce, it was a lot of work but it works. More rewarding to work with a complicated kit that has nice details than an easy but less detailed kit.

You pulled it off and the Sunoco livery is a nice change from the common red Ferrari (if common can be said of a Ferrari)

Thank you  for clearing that up Mike.  I was unsure myself.

Dave, I think both you and vintagerpm are correct.

I was building more of a phantom than a specific car.  As you all point out the S isn't the correct body for that livery but I liked the look.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Looks great in the Sunoco livery. Kirk F White was certainly associated with some great Ferraris including this one and the Gurney/Yates Cannonball Ferrari Daytona

I just saw this post, and I apologize for "stepping on it", but many, many years ago I built this same car except I converted it back to the actual car that Penske ran back then.  I started with two kits.  One was a very poor kit, I think it was marketed by Essex, that had a very "loose" interpolation of the body, but it did have a nice engine, which I used.  The body was from a version by Italeri, I think, which I heavily modified into the version as run by the Penske guys.  I just wanted to show the correct version of the car since there has been conversation about it.AL9nZEXqLmmt02328ZnRCEpAM_5mA0-ooI5bg6uYAL9nZEWnFTK0t41xb8ztHqWsaMTMVP0o6iKYFbTgAL9nZEV8vmNVhrPTppmNe_kliCM8BGsGDdgrewaT

Nice build of a challenging kit, Bruce - if Penske had entered the sportscar world championship a year earlier with a 512 S, it probably would have looked similar to this.
