It’s interesting, from a casting standpoint, that Brando was only 16 years older than Pacino and Caan, and just 11 years older than Cazale.

Wow i never knew that.Well they must have had some great make up artists on the set.

It's usually more successful making an actor look older (like Dustin Hoffman as a 121-year-old in Little Big Man) than younger (like 49-year-old Jimmy Stewart playing 25-year-old Charles Lindbergh in The Spirit of St. Louis).
