Gary Chastain Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 hopefully this will be a simple build with minor detailing. Frame together and a quick mock up. I did switch to a wider rim/tire combo on the front to fill up those big fenders. Plan is To build as day cab and the frame length lends it self for a nice flatbed build There have been a few issues with this kit but all workable but the fuel tank just would not clean up well. Decided to build my own tanks, see how this goes. Quick mock up to see if homemade tanks, battery box and AIM tool box will fit. Doing a flat bed that I will scratch build (bed in picture is mock-up only) with a headache rack of some sort. 6
Jim B Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Very cool. I'm (trying) to do something similar with a Chevrolet Bison. 1
Gary Chastain Posted October 12, 2022 Author Posted October 12, 2022 chassis painted, tire/wheels together 4
Rockford Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Great work so far, like the tanks, is it me or are the front fenders on these kits a little soft in shape?
Gary Chastain Posted October 13, 2022 Author Posted October 13, 2022 True Steve and this kit needs some attention, locating pins on front springs are gone and holes in frame are flashed over, just to acknowledge one of many issues.
Gary Chastain Posted October 14, 2022 Author Posted October 14, 2022 chromed the modified steps on the battery boxes. Homemade fuel tanks coming along, diesel fuel caps made and chromed. Got to finish homemade fuel tanks, chrome the straps, details the mounts. May mount the battery boxes in a further back position to enter cab then no steps would be needed on fuel tanks. Lastly, I am trying to find detailing information on the Detroit 8v92, been all over the internet but struggling for some really good pics. On the internet it appears this motor came in a number of different colors from light green to a mid green to red to gray. Assuming green was the truck motor color. Appreciate any ideas. 1

Rockford Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 Well done Gary, tanks look great. I've always thought the positioning of the battery box(es) was odd. I wonder how much it cost them to tool up for the extra steps? Later versions had a more sensible setup. On the engine colour, weren't old Detroits the colour of old engine oil because of all the leaks? Naughty old me! Over here in UK our "oil leaks with an engine attached" were Gardner Diesels.

Had to laugh??, agree on the battery boxes, I will keep working with it to come up with my own version.
Gary Chastain Posted October 17, 2022 Author Posted October 17, 2022 not overly happy with my Molotow pen, maybe I need a new one. Used a Gundam black micro marker to get the rubber straps under the chrome tank straps.
Gary Chastain Posted October 20, 2022 Author Posted October 20, 2022 the locating slots for the frame brackets were not square or parallel when I assembled the battery boxes. So I cut them apart, capped the ends and lengthened the boxes to clear stuff on the frame. I used the frame brackets from the steps that I was originally not going to use. Used plastic angle to make new steps that match, then added aluminum diamond plate for steps. Now the battery boxes are square and parallel.
slusher Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Your tanks and boxes look great! Nice color also! 1
Gary Chastain Posted October 21, 2022 Author Posted October 21, 2022 The bed frame is fabricated, next is rear bumper/step, headache rack, figure out lights. Then on to paint and wood floor. 2
Gary Chastain Posted October 24, 2022 Author Posted October 24, 2022 The fabrication work on the bed is near complete. Next final sand, primer and paint. The reassemble the wood floor and add all the lights.
Gary Chastain Posted October 24, 2022 Author Posted October 24, 2022 Not sure I am happy with the rear bumper.
Rockford Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 Looks good to me. What's wrong with it in your opinion?
explorer2770 Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 I like the bumper as is. Looks better than this one: https://www.purplewave.com/auction/201202/item/DI1018/1987-GMC-General-Trucks-Flat_Bed_Truck-Missouri What are you using for the wood bed?

Steve: It looks out of scale, too big, but I am going with it. Brandon: I am using Balsa wood strips from Hobby Lobby
Rockford Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 (edited) The bumper looks like some of my old girlfriends, quite hefty and something I wouldn't want to wrestle with because I'd incur more damage than them! Perfectly practical qualities I would say. Edited October 26, 2022 by Rockford Text editing 1
