Porsche 918 Spyder

[70 Sting]

Good Evening,

Completed and photographed this latest build - Revell's Porsche 918 Spyder. It's a nice kit that goes together very well with the exception of the glass engine cover, which in my case was warped. I  messed up the first paint job and had to strip it and start over. Ended up with a couple runs and uneven coverage the second time around but there was no way I was going to strip and paint it again. Looks fine away from bright lights and the flaws are minimized with this style of photography. :^)  Interior is Tamiya German Grey and Semi Gloss Black. Chrome was airbrushed with Tamiya X-19 Smoke.

 

What I Learned:

1. First time using Alclad Candy Enamel paint (colour is Indigo). It was applied over their Bright Silver Base. Let me say, this paint is a dust magnet and still felt tacky after spending time in the dehydrator and a full week left alone. Had a really difficult time removing the dust before applying the clear coat. On top of this, it also chips easily (I did use Tamiya primer first). Touched up a few spots with blue and purple Sharpies.

2. First time using Alclad Aqua Gloss. This goes on very well and leaves a finish similar to Pledge - perhaps a little shinier. Aqua Gloss eliminated the tacky feel.

3. 90% of the rear engine is hidden after final assembly. I ended up glueing the warped engine cover in place anyway so no real loss here.

4. The engine cover decal is an odd brownish colour. I decided to coat it with a few layers of X-19 Smoke tined with X-1 Black.

5. The front electric motor cannot be seen at all - no point in painting this.

6. You can glue either the front or rear bumper to the body before painting - I glued the rear.

7. First time using after market seatbelts (Gofer Racing).

Harry,  the paint turned out to be very striking...like it a lot.  I understand your frustrations a lot.  I did this kit twice.  Like your version.

Wow Harry... you made an excellent model out of what appears to be not so great a kit! The paint job and detailing is just superb. Any insight on how you applied the Aqua Gloss (nozzle size, air pressure) and (how) did you polish it?

As regards the "visuality problem", I saw someone find a good solution to this in another forum. I might be tempted to try this out when I get to my build:

This a superb build, the color is awesome and despite the issues you had the paint job is nice and shiny. I agree with you ,alclad paint is a dust magnet. I might try their aqua gloss after seeing your results.

Thanks Rick. I'd be interested to see how your pair turned out. Any issue with the engine cover? How did you find the engine cover decals? I wouldn't be opposed to building another one in the future... perhaps in a more traditional colour.

Thanks Tommy. I used a 0.5mm needle at 15 psi. and followed the instructions on the bottle. It goes on quite wet so be careful how far you pull back on the trigger.

No polishing but I did use Tamiya's Modeling Wax. This stuff can be applied over the entire body including the windows. It's supposed to protect the finish and repel dust.

I saved your link in case I build this kit again some day. The components look like they reattach quite well. ?

Funny, I wasn't really into this build as I got off to a rough start. The pieces fit perfectly (engine cover excluded) and I'm sure you'll enjoy the build.

I think it might have been you who warned me a number of months ago about this paint. ?

I have to say, I might be a fan of their Aqua Gloss. No thinning, goes on flat and washes up with water.

Harry...here is a link to my build:  http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/175182-porsche-918-spyder-weissach-martini-package/  That decal was tricky...I cut t in half...right down the middle. More tips in the picture captions. The second build always goes quicker and better.   Go for it.
