On a two tone paint job, has anyone used a metallic for one colour, and a solid for the other? Just wondering if it would look OK, or would it be better to use a pearl clear over the solid so they sort of match? Opinions? Thanks!

Not a problem at all... just use good tape (I prefer Tamiya or auto pinstriping tape) when you mask it off.

As far as looking good... absolutely. There's a guy around town who has a 55 chevy that's dark blue metalic/ some kinda coral/salmon pink that is absolutely gorgeous.

It depends on where the paint meets IMO. If it's solid roof and metallic body, it will look fine. I did it on this Nova wagon.

This Jeepster is metallic and solid. The chrome strip helps with the break of the paints.

As always, it depends on your preference.

I agree, the different color paints are common in the OEM. Look at some old pictures of the subject you're building in the style you are going for. You can find old OEM color charts that will give you some color ideas you may not have thought of.

Thanks Guys. I am wanting to do the roof and back half of a ‘55 chevy in a gunmetal grey, which is slightly metallic. However, the  maroon/red that I want to use on the front half is a solid color. The colors are divided by chrome trim so I guess I’ll give it a go and see how it looks.

It’s been done over and over again throughout history.

It’s extremely common to mix metallic and solid colors on 2-tone paint schemes.

Look at any paint chip chart, especially from the 50s, and you’ll see these combinations over and over again.

You should be okay Greg . . . and here are a few photos of a 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I with a two-tone paint finish, which is Shell Grey (metallic) over Velvet Green (solid) . . . As Leroy mentioned above, use a good automotive pinstriping tape for the masking, like the orange tape in my photos. Both paints for my build were cellulose autopaint from rattle can (custom mixed by a good paint specialist).

Yea, Tamiya tape is fine in alot of cases where things are flat, but nothing beats the real deal when it comes to curves and making SURE the line is crisp!

But you already know that. The phantom looks awsome btw.
