Many moons ago I had a magazine that I am quite certain was a Hot Rod mag, which featured what I figured at the time was one of the coolest boulevard cruisers ever. It was a '62 Ford Starliner with a Cammer. It had a big effect on me at the time, and I wanted to build a model of it, or at least heavily inspired by it. Over the years I've purchased a '60 Starliner and a '61 Galaxie kits from which I might cobble together something similar, whenever I get around to it. I probably have the magazine in my huge stash, and will dig it out for reference when the time comes. But then this thread appeared with a link to all Hot Rod magazines, and I was glad, as this would be much easier than digging through my daunting pile of old magazines. But alas, I can't find that Starliner article. My search thus far has been rudimentary, but I was sure the cover was a staged cruise scene with the Starliner in the background. This would be 80s or early 90s. Memories being what they are, I probably have this all wrong. Maybe it wasn't even Hot Rod, but I think it was. I'll have to dig deeper, I guess. The search continues.

The only other magazine of that nature I read on a regular basis was Popular Hotrodding, but that was mostly in the 70s. Nonetheless, it could be one of those. The search continues.

I just learned another great term; "Underslung" :) Is that actually a frame turned upside-down? This whole look is cool, and what a fun build it would make!

Underslung places the frame below the axel.

Nice article on Craig Naff - dubbed the Quiet Craftsman - ostensibly because of the wonderful work he had done, and yet how little his name was known. I couldn't agree more, as I too was unaware this was the gentleman that did the bodywork on a myriad of famous cars, including Cadzzilla and Smoothster. Here in the forefront was a stretched '33 Roadster with removable hardtop. HRM August 2006

Here is the car at the 2007 Detroit Autorama

I agree Scott. I wish there was a kit of Cadzzilla, and of Hemisfear. As it is we have to make do with the diecasts of these cars. Also personally, my number biggest wish would have been for a kit of Impostor.

BTW; for those wishing to wade into the deep end of the pool and make their own Cadzzilla, I found a great site with a ton of photos showing how Craig Naff did the body starting with a 1948 Cadillac Sedanette...

p.s. I also looked it up, and the correct spelling of the car apparently is "CadZZilla".

What a fun article on a great car! The '51 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe racer known as "Chicken Hawk" - apparently raced for over 40 years, and a genuine 10 second car with attitude to match! HRM August 2006

A little blip on the movie "Cars" which was just hitting theaters in 2006.

I totally think this movie belongs in any car movie collection, and to prove my point - here is a photo of Lightning McQueen being displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum! :)

HRM March 2007 was titled "Dare to be Different", and had some phenomenal - and different - cars to be sure!

The cover had the '73 Camaro racer known as "F-Bomb". This car gets a nod from me based on name alone :)

Then, quite possibly the sweetest looking car to ever grace the pages of HRM; a Volvo P1800S hot rod!

This one has already got me looking for scale models :)

To be rounded out by a very cool home-made sports car. What made this one particularly interesting is the ingenious way the builder incorporated the cockpit area of a '93 Camaro into his creation.

Now THAT's a car that would be fun to show up at a car show with! :) HRM January 2006

Rob Ida Concepts did complete the build awesomely

And it looks like they're still building great stuff (although there seems to have been all kinds of courtroom drama about this recreation - just like the original car had)

Oh, and HRM March 2007 did do a feature article on this car upon completion with some great photos!

More discussions about the rat rod look - here referred to under the faddish term "shabby chic"

The "before" picture and description, made all the more interesting by the fact that it describes this as a fiberglass car destined for its rusted look :)

I for one say "to each his own", but the reactions to this car after application of its patina are HILARIOUS!

A more "honest" car in the same issue was the '73 XB Ford Falcon Coupe owned and raced since new by actor Eric Bana.

At one point, Bana made a documentary about his relationship with this car, and a very interesting DVD it turned out to be.

An up-and-coming Chip Foose got a little write-up in HRM April 1991 with a concept he modeled in college.

This project was, of course, the genesis of what later became known as the "Hemisfear".

Great feature article on Hemisfear in HRM July 2007 with lots of drawings and photos.
