stavanzer Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 (edited) Years ago, Tim Boyd (I think) did a Comparo Article in SAE, of all the 427 SOHC Engines available in kits. He compared 4 or 5 engines, and had photos. I'm wanting that information, now, but no longer have an SAE collection. Does anyone have this article? I just need to know what kits have this motor. I remember that the "Ohio George" Willy's had one and so did the Revell Henry J and Austin kits, but cannot remember any others. And which ones are any good? Anyone have an opinion on which engines are lousy? I think the Revell 427 is supposed to be a Turkey, but I don't know about any others. Thanks, Alan Edited December 22, 2022 by stavanzer
Mark Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 That Revell Cammer (Henry J, Austin, Willys pickup) is to be avoided like the plague.
stavanzer Posted December 22, 2022 Author Posted December 22, 2022 Thanks, Mark. That's what I thought I remembered, but I could be sure. On to the others, I guess. Maybe I should just get Iceman's print, but I wanted to see what kit engines were out there.
LDO Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 Texas 3D customs is making one in whatever scale you need. Choose between stack injection and roots blower. I have several of his engines and transmissions in 1/8 scale and I have no reservations saying they are as good as any injection molded parts made. 1
Scott Colmer Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 This one is from the AMT LIL' Showrod series. It's from the Lil' Gasser. I felt it was pretty close. The valve covers might be on the narrow side. This is the 1/24th T'Rantula. It looks to me the same proportions as the Lil' gasser. I recently saw a Ross Gibson resin SOCH engine and the valve covers were much wider than the two offerings above. You will have to hunt for these as they are no longer produced. Here are a couple of shots of the real thing for comparison 1
Scott Colmer Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 Just saw LDO/Lee's post. That 3D version looks dead on to me. 1
Bainford Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 (edited) A couple other kit Cammers; - JoHan Maverick pro stock. A good looking engine, though with some accuracy issues the anoraks will find fault with, such as the same block being used for the 427 Cammer and the Boss 429, which in 1:1 are two different engine families. The Cammer parts are decent. - MPC flip from Mustang (origin Ohio George Mustang?). Most of the engine is undersized and generic, but the Cammer parts look great, and includes the 'Ford 427' lettering on the cam covers, which many exclude (most cam covers in period did not have this lettering). - AMT '68 Shelby, some kit releases but not all. A decent engine with nice looking Cammer bits. Seems to me there was a thread on the forum a while back listing and comparing kit based Cammers. It would be worth while to dig up that thread. As mentioned above, Texas 3D Customs has just released a gorgeous Cammer, with induction and transmission options. Having purchased some of his stuff, I can say his engines are top notch. Thanks for the correction, got the two kits mixed up. I think the Maverick comes with both, but the Comet definitely comes with the Boss only. Original post edited.
Fat Brian Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 Don't forget the Moebius cammer from the 65 Comet drag version. That's probably the best overall kit version. That being said, the 3d version above looks like the definitive version if you're buying one now.
