Ben269 Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 Trying to get this one completed. I am building the earlier version, but I can't find a picture of the rear of the car. Anyone know what the back of this car looked like?
Johnny Canuck Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) "Anyone know what the back of this car looked like?" Richard Petty? You've also listed it as a Montego. It's a Cyclone. Edited January 6, 2023 by Johnny Canuck
TooOld Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 The Wood Brothers '71 Cyclone has always been a favorite of mine and yours is looking great ! More photos please !
Ben269 Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 https://www.motortrend.com/news/woods-brothers-1971-mercury-montego-nascar/ Yeah, Petty and a bunch of others. Hot Rod referred to it as a Montego, and I think there is something about the difference in grills? Not sure. Either way, I used this article for most of the reference, but this version has the later graphics. the Purolator graphics on the side are the later version, the one I'm trying to replicate is the earlier. I'm sure its close, but there are several options on the decal sheet.
Ben269 Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 (edited) I used the Polar Lights chassis and the MPC body. PPP tires, I still need to weather them. Chassis is almost done. Need to finish the dash. Edited January 7, 2023 by Ben269
Dave Van Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Just in case you need interior......from my recent trip to the Wood's shop....

You've also listed it as a Montego. It's a Cyclone. Referred to as a Cyclone. The grilles however make it a Montego. Cyclone grilles we’re different. Aside from that a Cyclone was nothing but a Montego with different trim. You could even get the 429 engines in a regular Montego.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 15, 2023 Posted January 15, 2023 Very nice. Stock cars from this period still had some relationship to actual "stock" cars, which I found to be much more interesting. 2
Ben269 Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 I found a few races from 1972 on youtube, and I was able to find the back of the car during some pitstop footage. That will get the back shored up. I only have a few more decals to add. Does anyone have any good tips for replicating a spoiler? I think I will probably use sheet styrene, but I've seen some people use aluminum? A soda can or something? I wonder if I can get a smooth enough cut on a pop can or not...
dawgvet Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Love this build! One of my absolute favorite cars!
Bainford Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 One of my favourites, too. Yours is looking great. Very nice.

MartyC Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Soda cans work great for spoilers, they're scale thickness and cut with a pair of scissors.
Rattlecan Dan Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Gonna' be a Goodun' Keep on Keeping on. Thanks for sharing.
