I am going to have a Monogram 40 Ford pick up cab and front fenders and thinking about building a larger truck so did the larger trucks share the same front sheetmetal as the half ton or was it the one with the different front sheetmetal or was that one a different year, thinking about building a tow truck this time if I can find a donor for the winch and other related parts.

Do you mean this style? the emhar bedford tow truck might give you everything but the cab, engine and gearbox but i dont know for sure

The 1/2 ton truck shared its front end design with the cars having its headlights integrated into the fenders. The heavier trucks used standalone headlights like the older trucks. Not sure beyond that what changes need to be made.

Yup, the heavier trucks had the front sheetmetal shown above, and heavier frames, entirely different from the car-based 1/2 ton pickup frame.

This is a '38 one-ton panel. You can see the shape of the frame rails, which should get you plenty close enough for what you want to do.

One more thing: there's absolutely no reason the 1/2 ton pickup couldn't have been converted to a wrecker, either by reinforcing the rear frame rails and fitting a heavier axle, possibly semi-elliptical longitudinal springs, and dual rear wheels...or simply putting the light pickup cab on a heavier frame, and possibly hogging out the front fenders for bigger tire clearance.

Lots of "junkyard-dogs" were built from available bits back in those days.

Might just build a home made truck,I remember seeing those trucks but did not know what year they were ,going to get a set of dually wheels from Scenes unlimited and see what I can build.  Was there a kit that had a hand crank style wrecker as that might work better for a home built truck.

I built mine from a Monogram pickup , widened the front fenders 3" , used the Opel Blitz for the running gear and added the flat head out of the pickup .

Always several on eBay, sometimes as low as $50.

I do not remember seeing them in hobby shops but never looked at military models since they usually were a different scale.

Italeri (boxed sometimes as Revell) has both 1/35 (primarily military) and 1/24 (civilian) Opel trucks.

Here's a couple of '41 fire trucks that I built some time ago.  I used the Monogram '40 For Pickup cab and hood, and the Monogram '36 Ford front fenders/head lamps.  The '40 Ford frame was used for the front protion, and then a scratchbuilt frame behind the cabs.  Wheels/tire were my own resin castings.

Would like to get the Opel but out of my budget right now and will check and see what I have in my parts stash and go from there, spent too much money getting the parts for the 60s parts bash and doctor bills will be coming soon for the surgery last friday.

While there are several 1:24 / 1:25 scale diecast trucks with old-style hand-crank tow booms, AMT offered a tow truck option with their 1934 Ford truck kits, which has been reissued recently.

Plans might be changing for this build,I got the 80s version for the bed to put on one of my 60s built eBay purchases and the chassis and drivetrain on another I used for parts but got the messed up paint off the bed I was going to use so I will have a complete body.  I got on to Scenes unlimited s website and looks like it was taken over by another so I do not know if those dually wheels are still available so it might get built as a half ton but will see what I can find.

After a close inspection of the 60s version I was wanting to save with the 80s chassis it might be a better candidate for the large truck, someone had put the custom exhaust that attaches to the bed sides and if I can not find any then that's the one going to be a big truck and the bed will become a utility trailer and that is if I can find dually rims and tires.  Might be a project down the road.
