James Maynard Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 I have recently bought several cans of assorted colors of Rustoleum paints. They are like spraying colored water on my models. Even primer is bad. It runs off soon as it hits the parts I spray it on. Is anyone else having this issue with Rustoleum?
Smoke Wagon Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Did you try shaking the can before spraying?
James Maynard Posted January 19, 2023 Author Posted January 19, 2023 Of course. I always do. Some of the cans do well. While others don't.
plastic trucker Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Rustoleum has gotten really bad since the pandemic. Don' know if it's bad quality control or if their trying their best to go out of business. Some of my paints go on like sand paper or you have to spray them upside down to get them to spray at all. 1
cobraman Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 I never had good luck with them, quit using on models a long time ago. 2
Dpate Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) That's a sign telling you to stop using them on expensive model kits. Use them on outside plastic furniture what there meant for lol Edited January 20, 2023 by Dpate 1
peteski Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Rustoleum (along with Testors and many, many other brands) are all part of the giant coatings and adhesives conglomerate called RPM. I doubt they want the Rustoleum division to go out of business. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPM_International Some of their consumer brands: https://www.rpminc.com/leading-brands/consumer-brands/
StevenGuthmiller Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 I stopped buying Rustoleum paint some time ago. For me, it was generally too thick to spray from the can, and after one use, the nozzles plugged up on me virtually every time. There are far too many good paint brands available to waste my time on lawn furniture paint. Steve 3
Horrorshow Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 I have always had good luck with them, until lately. The flat black primer comes out almost powdery. Then it cracks when it dries.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) Real shame too, 'cause it used to be a quality product, for decades. But then the know-nothing bean-counters come in... Edited January 20, 2023 by Ace-Garageguy 2

Fat Brian Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Yep, I've noticed they're runnier too. I've been spraying from further back so the paint goes on a little drier but the surface is a little pebbly, fine for flats but less than ideal for shiny stuff.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 You probably need a phone app to get good results now... 1
Bills72sj Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 I must have gotten the last of the good batches. All mine spray just fine. But then again, they are only for chassis plates and suspension pieces.
ozmodeler Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 With the cost of model kits these days ,dump the furniture paint and buy Tamiya hobby spray cans or use an airbrush. 2
BlackSheep214 Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Hmmm.... I never had a problem using Rustoleum All in One rattle cans (primer and paint). Krylon on the other hand is pure garbage.
Dwight55 Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Ever since they started making primer and paint together, I've had problems with that brand. And Krylon is just as bad
Dave Van Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 FIX??? Tamiya TS and Dupli-color..................... 5
Mark Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 With what the owners have been doing to screw up Testors in recent years, why give Rust-Oleum any money? 3

Rust-Oleum is a DIY paint for the guy or gal that 1 or 2 times a year use spray paint to cover something.......expectations are very low. THAT is what that paint is made for. 1

keyser Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Not to mention non-morons hard to find so that market segment dried up??? 2

Now, not so much. Rust-Olium was the go to when I was a kid. Very high end paint for the average guys project. Dad always used it.....it lasted forever. 1
ranma Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 The last couple of cans of Rust-Olium took a long long time to dry! it was still tacky well over a week& 1/2! Some on here say that Krylon is garbage, But I've never had an issue with their Short cuts craft & hobby paints. Now the only issue with getting the short cuts is it's been hard to get due to some supply chain issues that hasn't seemed to have affected Rust-Oliums BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH paint's. There is one thing I agree with though is that the primer/paint mixed paints are bad. Be it from either Krylon of rust olium, and I'm sure it's not just me but it seems that it dulls their normally glossy paints.
