NYLIBUD Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 Anybody been catching the coverage of Barrett Jackson collectible auto auction from Scottsdale AZ this past week?Good Lord there were some nice cars this year. And I can’t get over the amount of pick ups,Blazers, and Broncos,(old and new) that were at the auction. Some of them were fetching a huge sum of $$.Today is the last day of the auction, and this is when they bring out the best they have to offer..However there was one particular car that sold earlier this week that I still couldn’t believe what it sold for.It was a very low milage, show room condition 81 Z28 Camaro that sold for around $98K.?♂️That has to be a world record.I mean yea it was a really nice car,but come on $98K?Some of these guys just have way too much money burning a hole in their pockets. And I know a lot of folks don’t really like watching Barrett Jackson,or even Mecum, because the prices of some of the cars are so high. And while I agree 110%,I just really watch it simply to see all the different cars.?. 1
TonyK Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 Exactly the same reason I watch it is for all the different cars. Lots of them I don't like but a lot I do like. And those guys and gals giving us a whole bunch of interesting facts about the cars.
NYLIBUD Posted January 29, 2023 Author Posted January 29, 2023 Welp the long week auction is now in the history books.Just incredible cars to see and drool over. The highest paid car was an 89 Ferrari F40,which sold for $2.5 million. It was tuned to over 1,000 Hp.Except that it was painted,or wrapped in some really ugly gray color. But as I said,it was a really good auction. 1
89AKurt Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Since I have a '68 Chevy C-10 rust bucket, I checked out the website of another auction, looking at the reserve prices. Some of the prices are ridiculous, but hey, if you won the lottery would you care? I live about 100 miles from Snottsdale, could go in person and pay a bunch of money to take pictures I'll never look at later. I've enjoyed seeing the auctions in the past, saw Gen. Goring's armored Mercedes get fired up to leave it's special trailer for the block, for example.
89AKurt Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Too funny, just before jumping out, saw this ad above the OT. They're smoking something for that Square body Blazer, and that Bronco! That's the influence these auctions have.
Mike C. Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Typical B.J. Super Saturday with all the big wigs up on the stage patting themselves on the back selling some bran new vehicle at a ridiculously overpriced sum. Clamming it all goes to charity when most of it really goes into their pockets. Ironic when Craig Jackson stood on the stage and had the winning bid on yet another Hemi 'Cuda. Didn't he just go through a lengthy court battle a few years ago when another Hemi 'Cuda consigner sued him for fixing it, so he won with a low bid. I'll still tune in to see all of the nice stuff. One thing that drives me nuts, is that when you can see a really cool vehicle coming up next on the block, they immediately go to commercial break and return with a 2008 Mercedes or something like that that you can't help but see every day on the road. Mecum does the same thing. I can't be the only one who notices this. On a different note, these girls that put the sold signs on the vehicles at the end of the block are easy on the eyes. ? 1
espo Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Saw a little of the auction Saturday night. Outstanding looking cars and trucks with selling prices to match. Everything seemed like it was anyware from $100k more than at Mecum or even double in same cases.
BlackSheep214 Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Didn't watch any of it. Didn't know it was on. Oh well...
1972coronet Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 The whole thing is -IMO- just a bunch of wealthy Tommy Bahama shirts, Oakley multi-colour shades, and light beer daytime drunks who believe that they're at Sotheby's bidding on a counterfeit Fabergé egg. 1 1
TarheelRick Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Same topic, different subject. Was watching an auction the other day and a bait-casting fishing reel went for $11K. It had some fancy name and I believe it may have belonged to a big-name fisherman, but that is a lot of catfish. In another auction Marvel comic #15 that introduced Peter Parker as Spiderman went for $19K. I guess if you are a collector and have unlimited funds, then all is well. For me personally I do auctions like I do gambling, set a limit and stick with it.
BeakDoc Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 I usually enjoy the earlier days of the coverage. I find that there’s a wider variety of cool stuff on those days. I tried to watch on Saturday but 3 hours of nothing but resto-mod Tri-Fives, Corvettes, Broncos/Blazers and Mustangs with just a sprinkling of anything different was more than I could stand. And just when it looks like something cool is about to roll up on the block…. Let’s go to April in the staging area so she can preview yet another Bronco with the alacrity of a 12 year old giving an oral book report on a book she didn’t read. 3

Barrett Jackson- Tommy Bahama, Oakleys, light beer. Gooding & Co- Brooks Brothers, Ray-Bans, Simi chardonnay. Artcurial (Retromobile)- Armani, Persols, Veuve Cliquot. At least everybody's still day-drunk. 5 hours ago, BeakDoc said: I usually enjoy the earlier days of the coverage. I find that there’s a wider variety of cool stuff on those days. Several years ago it was '70 Chevelle SS454s. It seemed like every other car on the block was yet another '70 SS454. That was what cured me from watching B-J. It's just an endless parade of high-dollar me-too mobiles punctuated by dimwitted commentary and the occasional insanely overpriced tax-deduction charity car. The "cheap cars" on the early days are definitely more interesting... as the price goes up the interest level goes down. Edited January 30, 2023 by jaymcminn 1
NYLIBUD Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 (edited) Well I have to say that I totally agree with what some of you guys are saying. There definitely were way too many resto-mod Corvettes, pick up trucks,Broncos,Blazers, and very high dollar exotics at the auction.I mean I couldn’t believe how many Broncos, Blazers, and pick ups there were at the auction..And yes, there were way way too many commercials,or cut aways to one of the commentators looking, and talking about some car in the staging lanes. That was quite irritating..But again,as I said,I really tried not to pay too much attention to the prices of the cars. And just tried to enjoy seeing the different cars coming across the block.I just wish there were more of the number matching American Muscle cars. The Boss 429s,Superbirds,the Road Runners,Chevelles,Hemis,etc..And your right Mike,I couldn’t agree with you more, the girls writing the sold price decals on the cars, was actually one of my favorite parts of the auction.Very easy on the eyes.??.Oh and this was the highest priced car at the auction. An 89 Ferrari F40,which sold for about $2.5 million.I just don’t understand what was up with the color of the car.? Bugatti Fan Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 (edited) Barrett Jackson The World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions? Hmmm? Bonhams, Christies and Sothebys come more to mind to me as big league auctioneers of classic autos Over here in the UK we have a TV programme named Bangers and Cash that features an auctioneer of vehicles and automobilia named Matthewsons based on rural Yorkshire. The sheer variety of vehicles and allied memorabilia is amazing and varied from the very odd occasional exotica right down to mainly more mainstream affordable collectors cars that were everyone's run about in the past. The bidders in the main are down to earth everyday folk, not bling adorned celebs and the mega wealthy. Edited January 30, 2023 by Bugatti Fan
ChrisBcritter Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 Looking through the results, I was very amused to see EIGHT Eleanor Mustang clones - I bet Denise Halicki was not happy about that now that she lost her court case, especially with the six-figure prices they were getting. Only two 190SL Mercedes this time, and no 300SLs No '89 Porsche Speedsters either. Just two Edsels, both the relatively common '59s.
imarriedawitch Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 I feel for the guy that has to know how to open the hood of every vehicle that rolls up to him. Went to BJ Las Vegas 2017 and it was a terrific experience. Three day pass for $45 seemed like a deal to me, especially by LV entertainment standards.
Mike C. Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 I DVR the whole thing so I can FF through all the BS. which is most of it. It's no longer about car enthusiasts. It's a showcase of guys with way too much money looking for something to spend it on. Guys that think if they go around repeating the words Shelby, Hemi and billet. people will think they know what they are talking about. 1
RSchnell Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 (edited) I built a '62 Corvette for a customer that went across the block at one of the Palm Beach auctions. While it didn't have the hubbub like Scottsdale, it was still a fun experience to be part of the process. But not one I'd want to do all the time. That was 16 years ago. Now, it's nothing more than a dog & pony show. I'd rather go to Mecum and wander around than Barrett-Jackson. One thing I don't understand is why you have all these people standing around on the auction block.... What's that all about? Edited January 30, 2023 by RSchnell Typing

Some people are so starved for attention that they will do almost anything to get their mug on TV. They will run over to the car or truck being bid on and look inside and stand by the open hood as if they know what they're looking at, then walk away like it wasn't good enough for them. I have noticed that they really do get in the way of actual bidders at times. 1
1972coronet Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 Too much shvantz fighting at those Barren-Jackass auctions.
ChrisBcritter Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 One car I did like on Sunday was a low-mile '92 Caddy Allante; it went for $11k which is only slightly higher than what they go for on Craigslist in Palm Springs.
Rob Hall Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) Barrett-Jackson was always fun...I think I went at least a dozen times to the Scottsdale event between 2000 and 2017.. a lot of walking, a lot of interesting cars. Sensory overload. I went to a few of the R-M and Gooding & Company auctions over the years also when I lived there. Edited January 31, 2023 by Rob Hall

Yea i saw that. Not a big fan of the Allante, but there were a lot of nice cars that were sold yesterday.I’m not really sure why yesterdays final day of the auction, was not televised.Instead, you could only see the coverage via Live stream on line..I might try to get down to Florida in April for the next auction in Palm Beach.Who knows maybe I can find a nice ride that won’t break the bank.$$.?♂️
