ModelcarJR Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I bought this kit a long time ago, probably 1990 or 1991. I also bought the Indy Pace Car model, a convertible, having grown up in Indianapolis, I was a big Indy Car fan. I actually gave the Indy Pace Car to a fellow modeler at the time who had ruined his model and wanted to try to build another. So this one hung out in the closet for the last 30 years. I don't know how the Beretta became the Pace Car for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing but the Beretta was short-lived in the Chevy stable. I've started this kit and its pretty basic. I have attached the ground effects and painted the body red, one of 5 colors used on this model according to the instructions. The instructions suggest that the interior should be gray or tan. So I'm going with a gray and tan combination in the interior. I'll rub it out tomorrow and see where this goes. The black trim around the windows and the B pillar I'm sure will be a lot of fun! Thanks for looking! ? 2
charlie8575 Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 The interiors were actually monotone, either grey or tan, more accurately, a very light brown. Tamiya has a nice flat light grey that's a good match for the GM grey interior of the vintage. Testors flat tan in the square bottles is a good start at the light brown interiors. You might want (literally) a drop of black for a little closer match. As to the body, GTUs as I remember were in black, white or Torch Red. Charlie Larkin
kelson Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 An oldie for sure!,i remember seeing these everywhere, glad to see you're finally building it!.
Kennyboy Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 My brother actually had a red Beretta GTU. My wife had a red Beretta GTZ and at the time I had a Calais Quad442 (that I raced SCCA). The interior of his was light gray with very fine red pin stripes in the flat of the seats. 1
ModelcarJR Posted February 24, 2023 Author Posted February 24, 2023 Thanks, Charlie, Curtis and Ken! I appreciate your comments! I realize the Beretta had a very plain interior. Photos that I have seen seem to display a lighter and darker shades of tan or gray in the interior. Maybe its just the difference between fabric and plastic parts but it seems to be different shades. Personally, I don't like gray and generally use Gunmetal and flat it out for more modern interiors. This interior has very little detail. No trim on the doors and only a couple of gauges on the dash. So I thought I would jazz it up a little bit by making it a two-tone with Gunmetal and Tan. So that's the departure from stock. Thanks for looking and thanks for the info!
ModelcarJR Posted February 24, 2023 Author Posted February 24, 2023 I rubbed out the body as much as I care too and then painted the black window trim. I taped off the window trim and used a sharpie and black acrylic paint around the mirror and in the corners. I taped off the cowl and radiator support in the engine compartment and sprayed it with semi-gloss black paint. So the paint on the body is completed. I still have to rub out the hood. On to the engine! Thanks for looking! ? 3
KWT Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 This is looking pretty awesome. These things were running around all over the place in the day.
ModelcarJR Posted February 26, 2023 Author Posted February 26, 2023 Thanks, Jeremy and Carl! I appreciate your comments! This one is done! The turbo engine in the car was a nightmare! Missing pins, pins that break, and no pins at all! But I finally got it together and its not coming apart because there is plenty of superglue on this engine! I also had to shorten the radiator support on each side to clear the ground effects that I glued on before painting. Probably should have waited to glue on the front panel until after the chassis and engine were in the body. But it all finally came together despite the 30-year procrastination. Thanks for looking! ? 1
