Hawk312 Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 Has anyone found a real substitute for this? This stuff was great, and was my go-to for probably decades. It would set quickly, but would give you a couple minutes to adjust the parts if needed. The ones with the red label in the black bottles are not the same...longer to set, etc. The tubes, forget about it. I am not wanting to resort to CA glue because of the risk of haze. And the Tamiya cement in the clear bottle with the green label works by a different process and has ZERO set time (must hold the parts together and apply glue). Thanks for any help.
vintagerpm Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 Faller also makes several grades of glue like this, but can be harder to find in the US. 2
espo Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 I have used the same Model Master glue forever. When I saw that Revell was offering their Contacta #39604 I wanted to try it. While I like it maybe even a little better than the Model Master product, I have to keep removing the delivery needle and cleaning it out after just a few uses. I do cap it right after use, but it still keeps getting blocked. They also offer a Contacta Clear, for windows and mainly clear parts. This has a brush applicator and is thicker consistency. I have used it for many other applications, and I'm pleased with how it has worked.

I prefer the humbrol glue myself, but the revell is a close second but it sometimes struggles to bond some black styrene while the humbrol works but is a little thicker

I didn't know the Model Master was discontinued, it's my favorite glue for a strong welded type bond for things like door hinges and such. Glad I have a nearly full bottle of it. 1
TonyK Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 I believe everything from Model Master is gone. I relied on MANY colors of bottle and spray and now am frustrated when I need certain colors I used for years. Have tried to find similar replacements but haven't. The available glues from different company's aren't a problem.
charlie8575 Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 I've been using the Contacta Professional, and it's very good. I've had a problem with the needle coming out of the bottle, though, when I take the cap off. That aside, great glue. Charlie Larkin
Biggu Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 My question is... when a company has a successful product and sells well, why would they stop making it ? Seems counter productive to me, and yeah, I know all about the corporate stuff and board rooms and executives and the 'bottom line ' etc, etc, still seems silly to me....... It is my go to as well, been using it for years, and prefer the container with the metal tube rather than the one with the plastic one....excellent glue for how I build....
Lunajammer Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 I don't know if this helps, but when my tube glue gets old and stringy, I glob it into the (overly thin) Testors liquid cement and stir till I get a consistency similar to the MM glue, which works as a great glue (with brush) that falls in between the excellent Tamiya liquid cement and Testors tube glue. The consistency helps control the work time. (Thinner, less. Thicker, more). It helps if you have an almost empty liquid bottle that you can combine the two into. + 1
ctruss53 Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 I still have some of that Model Master Cement. It is my go to for painted parts. I use Revell Contacta Professional as a replacement. I am not happy with the Contacta Professional though because the metal applicator tube doesn't stay in the bottle like it should. As a second replacement for the Model Master cement I use the Testors red and white jar with the brush applicator. I think the MM, Revell, and Testors cements are all pretty equivalent. I would not be surprised if they were all the same stuff in different packaging. Now the best glue in my mind for bare plastic is the Tamiya cement with the orange cap. If you want a quick bond for parts that fit very well together with no gap, then Tamiya with the green cap is awesome.

I still use that cement too. I like that it's a little viscous and holds parts in place pretty quickly even before it's dry.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I got the blue bottle above and it seems to be behaving just like the black bottle I was using. It even smells similar! Thanks again!
