mr moto Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 I'm very interested in using HOK KBC paints that are available airbrush-ready from TCP Global and probably from others also (any suggestions?). https://tcpglobal.com/collections/hok-kandy-basecoat-kbc-ready-to-spray They appear to be a one step "kandy-look" finish that can be easily matched/retouched. Could be wrong about that! Anyway, HOK paints always have a particular look that no other paint has. But they're expensive and good info about using them on plastic models is hard to find so I'm hesitant to jump in. Who has tried them, what primer or other base did you use and what clear coat? BTW, I'm absolutely NOT interested in using any 2K products at any point in the process. Thanks in advance. Any personal experiences are welcome!
stitchdup Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 I use hok on some builds. I use duplicolour primers, silvers, golds and clears with them. I've also used tamiya paints under them with no ill effects. This datsun is duplicolour white primer, hok hot pink with the fade on the sides done with tamiya before the pink went on. The clear is duplicolour also. and this is brandywine over duplicolour high impact gold and this is limegold over duplicolour silver. if you look close you can see where i toughed up a chip in the paint over the window which worked better than i expected with it being a pearl I'm going to be trying another brand of paint under hok in a couple of weeks 1
Can-Con Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 (edited) I've used them quite a bit in the past. You need to put a clear coat over them for the full effect. How they work is the tint bleeds into the clearcoat creating the "candy" effect. I've always used Zinzer BIN to seal the plastic over a light coat of any primer. and usually used Duplicolor lacquer clearcoats. The HOK paint is extremely hot and you need to seal the plastic well or it will do nasty things to it. Edited April 6, 2023 by Can-Con 2
mr moto Posted April 7, 2023 Author Posted April 7, 2023 Good looking paint, Guys! Steve, did you put the KBC directly over the primer/BIN or is there a metallic base coat also?

I usually do a coat of silver to check my bodywork as it shows any imperfection but the candy base coats are a pearl, not a tinted clear so you don't really need it. If it were the transparent regular candy you would. IIRC, the pickup is oriental blue CBC over the BIN.
mr moto Posted April 7, 2023 Author Posted April 7, 2023 Thank you! Now I'm getting the picture of how approach painting with HOK products. The next step is the really hard one - picking a color!
