1960 Ford F-100

With all the buzz about the new 1960 Ford F-100! I thought I would post some pictures of my WIP. I got a glue bomb from EBay for a very good price. I separated the cab and bed. I’ve shortened the bed, and so far repaired all of the defects from the earlier build. I measured the short bed from my Modelhaus 1957 Mercury M-100 kit.

I’m going to restore it with styrene strips.

Like the look of the short bed. The original builder must have used Lacquer paint without any primer.

Yes!! It will take several coats of primer and sanding to get the body smooth and straight. When the new 60 makes its debut, I may cast the tailgate for a smoother start. I think I will lose all the detail on the original trying to get it smooth.

I'm curious; does the inner-bed floor piece have molded detail on both top and bottom? I've heard talk of swapping-in a more detailed chassis and suspension from the AMT 1950's-era Ford pickup kits but am wondering if that '60s bed floor piece might be completely smooth on its underside?

It doesn’t have any detail! It has some locating tabs. All the details are on the frame/floor pan.

Good morning Dennis. I have a couple of questions on your build. #1 What did you use to strip the old paint. I have failed to practice what I have preached about the use of paint not designed for our plastic models. #2 The suggestion to use the bed floor of the 1950 Ford truck model. I think that the '60 Ford F100 with the fleet side bed had a steel floor and only the step side bed had the wood floor. I do realize that in the automotive world there seems to be an exceptions to every rules. Going to a step side bed might be an idea though.

I have tried brake fluid with a little success. It my go to is yellow can Easy-Off oven cleaner. It doesn’t seem to work as it used to! I’m sure formula changes due to environment. I have never tried any of the purple stuff. I’ve heard it works well. My 61 that I recently built basically uses the same floor pan/chassis as the 60. I scratch built a floor pan/ chassis for my 61 using styrene, strips, channel and shaped sheet. AMT Ford Thunderbird NASCAR front and rear suspension.

Thanks for the info. In the past I have used Purple Power, but that doesn't seem to be working. I have an old can of the Oven Off but that seems to only dull the color finish. I'm going to give it another 24 hrs. in the Purple Power pond and see. Like how you did the floor pan and the frame looks good.

Another thing I have done before dipping in the stripper of choice, is to lightly sand/scuff the surface. It kind of opens up the surface to let the stripping medium work. When I use the EasyOff I put the parts in a ziplock bag and coat them, seal the bag and let them soak and frequently rotate the bag for completely cover all surfaces, then when I rinse them off I scrub them with a toothbrush and Comet cleanser and repeat with oven cleaner and scrubbing. Hope this helps!

Got the same truck as a built up, just as you did.  Took it apart, cut the bed from the cab, cleaned it up and repainted.  I separated the front bumper from the grill and cast the grill and headlights in resin.  The headlights were opened up and new clear lenses were cast.  Wish the chrome trim was in better shape but it is what it is after a lot of years.

This truck is turning out awesome!  I love that you used the AMT NASCAR engine, I think its got good detail and a cool choice for hot rod builds.
