Amt Mercury cougar 1973

happy grumpy

Recommended Posts

Bought this at a swap meet for 10 bucks a few years back. After spending time on other projects I kind of forgot about it. After the box fell off the shelve, I took it as a sign to build it. Nothing fancy. I did not put too much time on it so the details are minimal but i looks ok. Paint is Tamiya metallic green over a silver base coat . I added goofy eyes clear plastic over the head lights to enhance their appearance.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Nice job!  We don't see those '71-'73 Cougars on here very often so I'm glad you posted.  Interesting idea spraying the metallic green over a silver base.  Paint looks sharp.

This kit used to have a reputation for sagging at the rear end, but it looks like you resolved that.

I've got one waiting to be built.  Any problem areas I should watch out for? As '70 Stang asked, what's your method for creating the vinyl top?

Salut Mario!

Wow, the paint is spectacular. Bravo!

Hope to see in at the Trois-Rivières show this sunday.

Merci Claude. Unfortunately,  I am still working and we are overbooked , I work on week ends on split shifts so I don't get much time off. Hopefully it will calm down when summer comes.

Great looking build! If you have paint left brush some green on each side of the center grill. That area is body color. Just an FYI

Thanks Andy. I still have some left, thanks for the heads up.

That Metallic Green is gorgeous !  For a quickie build that's one nice looking Cougar , well done Mario !  Those headlights look really nice too , good tip .

Thanks Bob. I remember in early 70's seeing cars with headlight plastic covers, some were even tinted blue.

Awesome colour scheme! Nice chrome and trim. Vinyl top looks great too… how did you do it - airbrush/spray can applied from a farther distance to create the texture?

Thanks Harry, the vinyl top is molded on and very nicely done too. I have seen some using masking tape and also paint airbrushed at a distance but it takes some practice.

Thanks Monty. The chassis is typical MPC so you have to guess the location relative to the body. I just eyeball it I guess I was lucky. The vinyl top comes molded on so that was easy. I just painted it semi gloss black.

Once again a nice model (that you don't see very often) from your workbench, Mario !

Thanks Helmut. Not my typical subject but I got this one at a bargain price. I put it off for a while though but I'm glad I did it finally.

Very well done. Engine and chassis pics?

Thanks Lee. This an ex MPC kit so the chassis and engine are not really heavy on details. I just wanted a quick build that looked good on the shelve. I did put more details on a RR 74 from MPC by grafting an AMT 69 RR chassis and engine, will post it eventually.
