Question for all you 1:1 rodders, street machine builders, and fabricators:

What is the BEST position for the ends of exhaust tips - ahead of the bumper vertical line, even with the bumper, or extending beyond the bumper?

Any difference vis-a-vis discoloration issues?  I've seen some cars with lots of carbon soot deposited on the body work or bumper. I want to avoid that.

I appreciate any ideas or best-practices.

Thanks!

This can vary from one body style to another. On a station wagon or any car or truck with that general design it would be best to have the exhaust exit slightly tuned to the side to exit. The air movement from under the vehicle tends to send the exhaust up the back side of the vehicle and depending on how airtight the passenger compartment is there is the possibility of the exhaust gasses entering the passenger area. Having had a pickup with a shell on the back this can also cloud the rear window and seemed to dirty up the tailgate. Exhaust extending very far from the back edge of the bumper can catch you shin, and that can hurt more than you may realize. Do what looks good to yourself, and then figure out what could go wrong, then decide what is most important to you.

My Trans Am had a slightly oversize factory style stainless steel exhaust in it. Seems to work fine.

I was looking at a '69 Riviera years ago where the dual exhaust didn't clear the back bumper, it shot the gasses up into the back of it. The rest of the car was solid as a rock but that bumper was completely rusted out from the fumes and humidity from the exhaust.

Mine is straight out the back, slightly past the bumper and slash cut. The tips are 4" diameter, 22" long and chrome plated. They are actually marketed for trucks.

I have had those blue dot tail lights on two different Grand Prixs. I got them from JC Whitney mail order in the late 80's. The car in the pics has a scratch built LED array inside with 4 blue LEDs behind every blue dot.
