Last weekend a good friend hosted a racing movie night. It was done outdoors in his backyard with a large screen attached to a back wall. The movie was "Le Mans". This got me thinking about racing movies that I've seen and enjoyed, but don't have in my collection. I went onto Amazon and went on a buying binge. Today's arrivals were Ford v. Ferrari, Winning and one other little known F-1 title. Still to arrive are Rush and Senna. My copies of Grand Prix and Le Mans will now have some additional good company on my DVD shelf.

"The Art of Racing in the Rain."

Wonderful movie, highly recommended for the whole family, although the racing takes second-seat to the main theme. Kevin Costner plays Enzo.

It will surprise you.

Pfffft.... Fast & Furious.... stupid movie series. Not a sanctio rd racing movie per say and othing to do with oval or drag racing. More geared to street racing.

There is “Days of Thunder” also, although I haven’t seen it.

Greg, I saw this one in the theatre and enjoyed it. My good friend Peter has rekindled my interest in NASCAR/stockcars. Thanks.

Gran Turismo is coming to theaters soon.

I have not played this game, however the translation into a movie looks promising. Thanks

I have not heard of this one, but the reference to Enzo means I have to look into it. Thanks.

Stroker ace is another good one. Mostly for the laughs, but there is stockcar racing in it. The start of the movie may be the best part though.

Sorry Andy, I'm not a big Burt Reynolds fan. LOL Thanks for contributing.

I think I saw the first 2 or 3 in the theatre. Les, you're right, at least a few of these need to be added. Thanks.

Happily, these are two that I do have already. Thanks.

I would politely argue that illegal street racing is not real racing. Just my two cents worth.

A couple of older movies that are really good "Thunder in Carolina" the (late '50's) early days of stock-car racing.  Another good one is "Last American Hero" roughly based on the life and racing career of the late Junior Johnson. Then of course there are the Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello movies "Fireball 500" and can't remember the other one right off-hand.

“The Speed Merchants” is a movie about the 1972 manufacturers championship series (sports car) races. I have the dvd but haven’t watched it yet. I’ve heard it’s good.

Logan Lucky - stock car racing is the backdrop. Awesome movie.

Cars - better acting than most of the movies mentioned in this thread. ?

Need For Speed - not a bad movie at all

Death Race - goofy action movie. I liked it. The sequels weren't as good though.

Haven't watched them yet, but I noticed On Demand that there's a movie about Lamborghini and one about Gilles Villeneuve. The trailers looked pretty good.

And for what it's worth, the first couple of Fast & Furious movies were definitely racing movies. Then they turned into car based action movies with no racing to speak of, but had some entertaining car chase scenes.

Illegal.  Attaching that accurate adjective to the slang term you used does not legitimize illegal activity.

i wasn't trying to legitimize it, the post is for racing movies, not legal racing movies. and if 2 people are competing to be first to get somewhere that is still a race whether its legal or not. if we exclude illegal racing activities many of these movies wouldn't qualify, for example the hire car race in days of thunder or enzo and ferruchio street racing in the lamborghini movie. the simple fact is they are just movies made as entertainment and they do things many of us wouldn't do. i watched oceans eleven and i haven't robbed a casino

Which Death race ?

The original one with David Carradine was "campy/cheezy"  but totally worth watching.

Cannonball run was also cheezy but I liked it anyway

Greased Lightning with Richard Pryer was a good one.

Not sure if these would qualify :

Thunder Road [1958]

Gone in 60 Seconds [1974]
