Quiet Riot.  They were the first metal band to top the charts.  That’s a pretty big achievement.

I think Mr Plant and the boys might have something to say about that...

The question that should be asked is:

What should Hall of Fame (Rock and Roll purposely left off because that is no longer what it is) induction be based on?

Long career, number of hits, number of albums produced, number of albums sold, first to do something, first to have a (whatever)in the band, first to use a (whatever) in the band, number of concert tickets sold, etc...

You know those “Top 100 singles ever” or “Top 100 albums of all time” lists? They always tend to have an overdose of more recent stuff, ‘cos people remember them, and really old stuff is forgotten. I heard one recently where “Careless Whisper” was No.1 and Robbie Williams had two in the Top 10, and nothing by the Beatles made the Top 20. I mean, I like Careless Whisper, but a better song than Penny Lane or Hey Jude? I think the Hall of Fame’s job is to recognise folks after some time has given a perspective on how successful, innovative, influential and important they were on “popular” music. Get rid of that “current hot thing” bias. Basically “Can you imagine them in the company of David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Prince and Dolly Parton?”

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with many of the names that have been floated in this thread, as I also disagree with many of the actual inductees. Just because it's your favorite band doesn't make them particularly worthy. While Rock and Roll is a broad genre, many of the listed bands are too fringe and don't have any staying power. They're the flavor of the month, so to speak. Their names will be erased from history and people will wonder why they're included. No one will ever listen to their music again. Number of albums means nothing. How many people did they reach? How did they affect our culture?  Those are much more germane. I think the folks at the hall of fame feel like they always have to induct someone every year and make a lot of stupid choices doing it. Just slow down and see what stays around musically and culturally.

Not that these awards matter in the slightest. It's just humans flapping their gums about pointless and petty things as usual. Yes, that includes me.

I agree Gary, especially on some of Mike C.s bands that I've never heard of before and I've listened to some pretty eclectic music.  , , "Big Star"? "Buffalo Tom"??? never heard of them and I bet most people reading this thread hasn't either.

This is NOT an attack on Mike's musical preferences, just pointing out bands no one has heard of don't end up in the hall of fame.

Heck, look how long it took to get Rush in there, I doubt Strange Advance or Doug & The Slugs will be nominated, let alone inducted.

I do rather like the fact the Kraftwerk were inducted as "Early influences"... Robert Johnson, maybe, but Kraftwerk?

(Even though I'm someone who buys the well-made argument that they were foundational to electronic music, disco AND hip-hop, so probably one of the most genuinely "influential" bands ever). It's the "early" part I'm questioning...

Long career, number of hits, number of albums produced, number of albums sold, first to do something, first to have a (whatever)in the band, first to use a (whatever) in the band, number of concert tickets sold, etc...

Officially, RRHOF induction is based on...

"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists' contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll."

So album sales technically don't enter into it, but it kind of goes hand in hand with the above.

So really, the biggest factor is the artists' impact on music as a whole. Have they influenced others in a significant manner? Did their arrival change anything?

There are some bands that are hugely popular, that I love, but they're not in. And rightfully so. Def Leppard for one. Huge sales, awesome band, but did their music really change or influence the music that came after? Not really.

Then you see a band like Metallica, or Depeche Mode. Huge sales, and their arrival on the music scene changed their respective genres of music. So 100% should be in there.

In the case of Depeche Mode though, this is where the line gets blurry. Are they a "rock" band? What constitutes "rock" music? DM aren't a rock band per se, even though they have a bit of that rock attitude.

Should Dolly Parton be in the Rock Hall of Fame? Hugely successful, massively influential on future artists, but not even close to being a rock performer. She should absolutely be in a Hall of Fame of some kind, but the Rock one? I don't think so.

A quick search on YouTube would fix that.

Another on I just learned is the MC5. Now if you don't know who they are, you've been living under a rock since 1968.

Then I've been under a rock since I was 3.

Now, you say "Another on I just learned", does that mean you had never heard of them and had been living under a rock too?

BUT, do you know 5440, Big Sugar, Spirit of the West, Saga, Strange Advance, Skinny Puppy, Wide Mouth Mason, Theory of a Deadman, Spoons, The Sheepdogs, The Partland Brothers, Pukka Orchestra, Prozzak, Moxy Fruvous, , , ,Killer Dwarfs???  , , I could name hundreds.

These were all Canadian bands that got considerable airplay on the radio and/or Muchmusic when they were popular and many of them are still known and touring.

I bet almost no one on this forum outside of the Canadian Content have ever heard of most of them.

I didn't choose the handle "Can-Con" out of thin air, it literally is the contraction for "Canadian Content" in the Canadian media.

Lolz. I've listened to at least half of those bands in the past week! Going to see Big Wreck in November. Saw Aldo Nova a couple of weeks ago.

Skinny Puppy should be up for the RRHOF. Not massive album sales, but hugely influential in the industrial scene. Arguably as big an impact as Nine Inch Nails, who were inducted a couple of years ago.

Dan, my biggest regret is not going to see Doug & the Slugs the last time they were here in Fredericton before Doug drank himself to death.

I was right outside the door of the club that night and didn't go in. ?

I herd of roughly half those bands.

I think, if we're equating a band by how many copies of a record the sell, we're missing the point. The Velvet Underground never sold many copies of any of their records but look at the massive impact they were on rock and roll. If we ar going on volume alone, then I want no part of the rock and roll hall of fame.

I thought it was pretty cool what Dolly Parton told them when they told them they wanted her in. She declined saying "I'm already in the country music hall of fame. I'm not even rock and roll."

This should put to rest any debate about whether or not Dolly Parton belongs in the RRHOF:

No, she's not a rock artist. This is just her doing something a little different for one album.

By that standard, Metallica should be in the country music hall of fame because they have a couple of songs with slide guitar and b-benders.
