I went into the local Michaels today in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was looking for a paint spray can of Krylon Short Cuts Forever Blue. But there were NO Short Cuts spray paint in stock. I was told by a sales person that they were no longer carrying Short Cuts. Instead are carrying Pebeo acrylic spray paint. The label claims it is water soluble acrylique. The can looks to be a bit bigger than the Krylon Short Cuts. Cost for the Pebeo is $19.99 Canadian dollars.

Anyone used Pebeo paints? What is your opinion?

Thanks

Never heard of Pebeo paint but at $19.99  CA  for  a can just a littler larger than the short cuts seem a bit over priced

Here in the states a can of short cuts is$3.99 at hobby lobby

Just my opinion but i would find a place that sells the Krylon befor i would pay the pirates ransom of $19.99 for a five ounce can of paint

FWIW the short cuts are 3 ounces

Pebeo is a well known, quality brand from France. I bought a multi pack of acrylics in tubes from Michaels. They were a thick artists' consistency, but they thinned with additional thinner. They sprayed well with an airbrush. If you can use a 30% off coupon, that would bring the price down to about $13, which wouldn't be that bad, considering a can has 65% more paint than a can of Krylon Short Cuts.

Had a look at the Michaels.ca web site. These Pebeo acrylic spays are 200ml cans ( a bit less than 7 ounces , I think about twice the size of the old Krylon Short Cuts cans.

https://canada.michaels.com/en/pebeo-chrome-gold-acrylic-spray-paint/10720780.html

Good selection of colours including metallics and pearls  $19.49 CDN and if you buy one you can get 30% off one regular priced item.

Only a few gloss colours and the remainder are matt so would require a gloss clear coat.

I will have to pick up a can next time I visit a Michaels and give it a try. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Most Krylon products seemed to have disappear from the shelves in Canada. I think it has to do with recent regulations regarding VOC's.

As an aside, there are a number of other brands of these new breed acrylic spray paints that seemed to aimed at crafters and street artists ( i.e. graffiti artists ) Sabatoz and Molotow are two that come to mind.  Vallejo has a line of spray acrylics, a number of military type colours and some of their Fantasy colors, all matt.

And if you are in Canada, deSerres https://www.deserres.ca/ is another retailer that has online sales and stores in a variety of locations including Halifax ( on Barrington St ). I typically find the prices at deSerres a bit less than at Michaels.    https://www.deserres.ca/collections/art-graphic-paint-aerosol-paint

cheers, Graham

I believe the Deserres store used to be Loomis & Toles, on Barrington Street, Halifax, a store I would walk to when I worked in downtown Halifax.

That's correct. Deserres is my go-to store for art supplies, etc. Lots of neat stuff there. The NSCAD store in Historic Properties is another good place for such things, though perhaps not so much for spray paint.

Quite possible. There are two deSerres stores in Ottawa and each are in locations that where once other art stores.

It has been a very long time since I had the pleasure of wandering around the streets in down town Halifax, more than 40 years in fact.

Indeed.  It is far to easy to become an "An art supply junkie" so I try and limit my visits but I keep getting drawn back in ;)

Thanks kindly for all the replies. I will pickup a can of Pebeo paint from Michaels with a 30% OFF coupon or venture downtown to Deserres.

Although hardly an art store, Michael's does carry Golden Acrylics in the "artist" section. I too like to visit DeSerres, especially for the artist grade acrylic paints that they carry.

Michaels also has spray cans of Golden acrylic for $15.00 and they are larger than the Pebeo but I do not think they are water based like Pebeo. At least from reading the label.

Ken, I just scrolled through all of the paints that Michael's had listed under the Golden brand. The only choices offered as spray cans were Archival Varnish Clear and Archival Varnish Satin. I don't think that I would pursue either of these as top coat for my car models, but who knows...

Indeed they do and these paints are also quite good.  However, the stock in the local stores has dwindled to near nothing and I think that they are on their way out, not the brand, just at Michaels. Perhaps it is just a supply issue of some sort. No one I asked in the store I recently visited knew one way or the other.

I was at one of the local Michaels yesterday.  Ottawa ( Ontario ) is lucky, there are four Michaels and two DeSerres plus a very nice traditional art supply store called Wallacks ( downtown Ottawa ).

Michaels was having a 40% off Labour day weekend sale. Get 40% off one regular priced item so I couldn't resist. I can also get a senior discount - every wee bit helps ;)

I purchased a can of Pebeo acrylic spray, Christmas Red.  There are quite a number of interesting colours in the line, it just happened I needed a red and this one looked like it would do nicely.

Had a chance to play around with it today and painted a few pieces.

First impressions are good. Covered well over Dupli-Color Primer Sealer, and has virtually no smell. Some of the other modern acrylic sprays also have low smell.

The smell of Tamiya, Mr Color, (etc) are tolerable but I pick and choose my times when I paint in the basement so as to keep the smell in the rest of the house to a minimum. I occasionally spray outside from time to time for the same reason but the dusty garage or windy deck don't always cooperate.

Price wise; list price at Michaels ( Canada ) is $19.49 CDN. Size of the spray can is 200ml.  Tamiya and Mr Color spray cans are 100ml and sell for around $11 to $12 CDN. Already the Pebeo is a bit better $ wise per volume and using the daily 30% discount plus a seniors discount makes it even more attractive.

So far, I like what I see. The very low smell is a big selling point. I will be buying more provided my other simple test work out.

Will they replace Tamiya or Mr Color or Dupli-Color or Vallejo sprays or others?  Not likely. Each brand but I am not above trying something new if does what I want it to.

I will provide an update in a day or two after I have given the Pebeo some time to dry and cure. Next test will be a compatibility test of Tamiya semi-gloss and Dupli-Color clear gloss over the Pebeo. Stay tuned, same Bat time, same Bat channel ...

cheers, Graham  ( aka ColonelKrypton OGE )

Thanks kindly for the update. I picked up some Krylon UV Resitant gloss today at Michaels with their Labour Day coupon for 40% off. Michaels is 2kms or a bit more from my house.
