It looks to me that you need to try getting a wetter coat. Sounds like the new thinning ratio should help with that.

I hear ya Bob.  It's always something with me when it comes to painting.

Well...this is starting to bother me now.  What a mess.  This was the second time to paint the 34 and I'm just not having any luck.  This time I used Tamiya X-14 Sky Blue, 50/50 mix thinned with Mr. Color Leveling thinner, 20-25 psi, about 4" away while painting.  This will be my last time then I give up.  I'm going to use the same paint but at a 2:1 mix and thin it with my over the counter lacquer thinner.  I'll leave the air pressure at 20-25 psi and hope for the best and expect the worst.

I know a few "good" modelers that would call that a great paint job...

Well....I'm sure there may be Bob, I just can't take that grainy look.

I would suggest that instead of stripping this again that you try to see what you can do to fix it.

You were having some success for a while after you did the experimenting. Have you changed the way you are doing things since you have been having problems.

I was shooting AMT paints around 1968 or so... I still have some models from back then. Like the south end of a northbound alligator... bad...

There is one modeler in the club, quite opinionated on paint work, spouts a lot of rhetoric I have heard before and his paint work is... not acceptable to me. He gets unintended effects I have never seen before.

I keep it simple, almost all rattle cans unless I'm, shooting nail polish. I would crank the pressure down to about 15-ish. Hand speed with that stuff is crucial. It has to look WET when it goes on.

With anything I paint, I walk the ragged edge of a sag or run rather than something grainy that I'll have to sand the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of. I believed what I used to read on old forums... "mist" coats... right... that ship has long since sailed.

You'll get it, just keep plugging away.

I appreciate the info Bob.  Same painting process so I don't know whats going on.  Maybe it's the weather change.

Thanks man and I hear ya.  It's always a work in progress for me when it comes to painting.

Oh man I'm so sorry you are having trouble with the paint. I can feel your pain. I have been there many times and likely be there again.

Good luck on the next round.

I have learned one thing that the paint and the model need to be the same temperature. I also found that the primer may be an issue sometimes.

With me, plus the fact that I am lazy... I avoid the airbrush since I have to clean it after and there are too many variables along the way.

I hear ya David.  The paint is just about stripped and ready for round 3.

I hear ya about the airbrush.  I kind of like it as I can control the paint much better.

Not much going on fellows.  In a holding pattern waiting for the Easy Off Oven cleaner to do it's job.  I think another round or two and it'll be done.

A suggestion. You might want to get some speed shapes so you can work out your paint issues instead of having to strip projects. Another alternative would be a couple of scrap bodies.

I hear ya.  I wasn't having a paint issue until this build.  Not sure what happened.

Ok fellows, I pulled the 34 body out of the tub with Easy Off oven cleaner this morning.  After about a week with using a tooth brush on the body every day and spraying more on it's just not going to get any more of the paint off.  I then went after it with a brass brush and sand paper.  After 4 hrs I cleaned it up and shot some Tamiya Gray surface primer to assessed the damage.  Not to bad but the doors will need a skim coat and re-sanding and priming.

Ok fellows....I didn't want to go threw another failed paint job so since the primer looked pretty kewl I decided to just shoot clear over it. The clear still needs to be wet sanded and polished. Once the black window frames, black decals, black key on the deck lid, and the Matt black running boards get installed I think it's going to look like one Bad looking little Street rod.

I think you'll hit the nail on the head with the black accents. Can't wait to see it under glass.

Thanks Kyle.  I think I achieved what I was going for.

The new body color looks very modern and currently something you would see on many new cars. The color really makes the black trim on the engine standout.

Thanks man.  I think the gray and black work together pretty well.
