THarrison351 Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 This represents the 2D Coupe that competed at Daytona in 1966, the same year it was originally released. This is the 1996 release. A curbside that could be used for slot car racing. It represents the real car OK. I added some bigger exhaust tips, enhanced the rear wheels, velocity stacks, and detailed the rear wing. I opened the brake intake ducts on the side and front too. The rest was paint and better decals. I did not add the oil cooler. I didn't have one to add. 10
TarheelRick Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Excellent build of one of the finest race cars ever built. You said you enhanced the rear wheels, but what tires did you use? I am pretty sure they did not come in a 57 year old kit.

All I did to them was reverse them, smooth the surface and add the firestone decals. The rear wheels are what was changed. The front and rear wheels have the same depth in the mold. Even though the rear tires are wider when you assemble them, the rear wheel halves are stuck down in the tire too deep. What I did was added the outer portion of the rim from a Monogram NASCAR wheel
happy grumpy Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Beautiful job on this. A very well styled car.
ea0863 Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Totally gorgeous Tim! It has some of the flavor of the Corvair Monza GT about it. I wonder if there is any relationship there? In any event, I would enjoy getting the Chapparal Coupe myself and perhaps kit-bashing it with the Corvair...
karbuildr Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Very well done build of an incredible race car. Details are excellent. I'm actually old enough to have watched these cars race (on tape delay!) back in the day. I always admired the advanced technology in the various versions of these cars. Very nice.
1959scudetto Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 Very nice, Tim - excellent job on widening the rear wheels to a more realistic size.
David G. Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 I recently acquired this kit at the most recent Desert Scale Classic swap meet and I'm planning to build it. My pre-build research turned up your WIP on the very same kit! An excellent build Tim! I hope you don't mind my using your photos as a resource. Cheers, David G.
Bainford Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Great looking Chaparral. Well done on the rear wheels, perhaps this simple kit's biggest failing. A rear wheel of the proper depth makes all the difference in the overall look. All round nice work.
