JollySipper Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Hello, fellow builders! I have a project coming up that the majority of the kit is molded in red..... I'll be painting it black and silver. I sometimes have the color leaching problem with colored plastics when it comes to the clear coats. I'm wondering..... How 'solvent-hot' is engine enamel clear? I understand that it has to withstand high temps, but I'm not sure how chemically hot it would have to be to do that. Really, I'm just looking for a clear spray that won't leach the dyes from what I'm working on....... Thanks for any and all help, guys!
Shark Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Have you tried sealing the colored plastic with a silver lacquer spray? 1

I believe that particular trick is to mostly keep light from coming through. I'm not 100% sure though. I haven't gotten the kit yet (it's on it's way...), I'm just gathering info so I can decide which clear to purchase........
JollySipper Posted October 7, 2023 Author Posted October 7, 2023 It seems that Aleene's and Mr. Hobby both make an acrylic clear in a spray........ Anyone ever use either of those?
slusher Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 (edited) Acrylic is water base and should not break your colors loose that cause bleed thru. Enamel is not hot so you should be good wit either one. Edited October 8, 2023 by slusher Typo
bobss396 Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I feel it is best to use a good primer as a basic barrier to color bleed. Probably using lacquer paints are also a good idea.
