customsrus Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Any suggestions on what resin kits are best for casting car bodies. Thanks
Shark Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Have you cast anything that large before? If you are just starting out, start with some smaller parts and work your way up. To do bodies, you really need a vaccum pump and a container to get the bubbles out of the silicone rubber for the molds. Then an air compressor and pressure tanks for casting. Not to mention the items to get the body ready to make a mold. You may want to contact a resin caster to do it for you. If it's something they can incorporate into their product line, they may give you several copies for the master 1
NOBLNG Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 (edited) Todd is correct. You pretty much need a vacuum pump and chamber to make good quality molds. And a pressure pot for the casting. I made a lid for a painters pressure pot to convert it into a vacuum chamber. I used Smooth On products for my molds and resin when I cast my Willys cab and I was quite happy with the results. Here’s a link to my build thread. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/156181-‘54-willys-pu/page/2/ Edited October 8, 2023 by NOBLNG

I do have a buck for the canopy. If you get it done, I want one. If I was finished moving, I'd offer to do molds and casts and vac-forms, as I've done lotsa silicone molds and polymer parts for product development and presentations over the years...but alas, I'm not set up at the moment (though I have vac pumps, pressure pots, etc.). Good luck with that one. I'd like to see more showcars available in resin.

I’ve made small parts out of resin before, never tried to do a car body. I may have to try just to see if I can do it without destroying the original.

A man with your other skills should have no trouble at all. Watch a lot of videos. Some are good, some not so much, but if you watch enough you'll get a feel for what's the real deal and what's baloney. This one's not one of my favorites, but he deals with making a mold set from a hand built master without destroying it. Edited October 11, 2023 by Ace-Garageguy
customsrus Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 Hey Ace here’s the reason I decided I needed another one. I want to make one stock and one a little different. Lol 1
customsrus Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 Since I had no takers on replicating this I decided to build another one. Still need to do more work to it but I’m getting there. I will try my luck at casting this in the future. 1
