Well folks, after a short hiatus from building I’m happy to say I’ve got a bench again. I have tools paint and supplies and the only kits that are not still in storage are these three vintage Amt kits, first release roadster, first release coupe and a second release roadster that will be getting a sympathetic restore. Also snagged a first release built up roadster and a complete first release Vicky.

But these are not the reason we are here today. After lurking in the shadows with nothing to show I started scheming… and started an idea to build what in my mind is a combination of some of the best parts that Revell has offered to date. To start with will be the 32 frame from the 29 roadster. While the frame in the new release 32 roadster is just as good, I like the underpinnings of the 29 kit. Engine has yet to be decided. I have purchased 2 new kits to start pilfering parts from, the aforementioned 29 roadster and the new release of the 32 roadster. My goal is to maybe finish at least one model this year.
On to the pictures.

The great thing about the early AMT '32's was the interchangeability of parts between the kits. The later Revelle chassis should be a big upgrade in that area.

Well I love kit bashing, and I love just about anything to do with this era of vehicles. So I will follow along Bil. ?

Thanks Greg, nice to have a loyal supporter

Glad to see you back, I love the enthusiasm you bring to the bench, and that you focus on hot rods (which aren't always bountiful around here)

Thank you Craig, it feels good to be back at a bench again, the last eight months of exile felt like I was in Dante’s inferno. I’m Hoping to achieve a level on this one that will surpass my last build the roadster vapor pearl.

Thanks David, unfortunately I will not be using any of the amt parts for this build. Those will be earmarked as survivor builds.

lastly a hint at a possible engine.

A '32 with an Olds 371 J2 should be a real tire-smokin' stump puller.   :D

It goes against my grain to put a non ford motor in a ford, buuuuut as long as it’s not a 350 Chevy I’ll give it a shot, that and all my kits with fancy ford mills are in storage. I may have enough parts to pull this off.

Olds rocket sourced, and an adapter made for the cad lasalle gearbox, valve covers are soaking in Windex to remove the centuries old chrome. They are a rather special set and I think they will add some wow factor to this engine. Picking through bins of mall parts has consumed some time to find all the right parts for this engine, still searching for a lower pulley and water pump pulley setup that looks right enough.

You see there are things about this community that i absolutely love, one is the passion that you see others put into their projects for the sake of accuracy, to take lumps of plastic and rubber and turn them into static art. The other is more profound than that, at least to me, is the idea sharing on how to achieve the results we desire, an unnamed member shared with me some photos on how to make one of my confabulated thingamajigs look a lot more like the real thing. I take this as encouragement to perfect my building, not criticism or anything that could be construed as such. So a huge thank you to the unsung hero( might be a tad too strong) who has acted like a mentor in this regard.

Today I focused my labour on the small things, the small annoying details that never seem to be right.
Like the missing fuel pump from the kit engine I found, the missing waterpump and crank pulleys, the generator mount. Breathers for the valve covers( boy those things are sweet)

Well after a lot on interwebbing (felt like spiderdude) I found resource pics and then the laborious task of sifting through bins of organized spare parts (I even hate myself for that(dang ocd/adhd))I found useable and serviceable parts. Yay! The only small part I could not find was a decent olds looking distributer( that’s okay we can use a magneto right!(RIGHT?))

Ok enough story time, it’s time for pics

Looking great, going to be a very cool build with kit bashing!

Thank you Carl. I can’t seem to follow instructions or build out of the box haha. I guess that where the fun is for me

This is going to be a nice build so I'm in for the long haul.  I like the Olds 371 J2 with the 3 Rodchester carbs.  Going to look pretty kewl.

Thank you Bob, I got caught up on some of your build projects, you’ve put some nice work in.

Alrighty then! So I’m going to visit my storage facility tonight, I need more parts so that means I’ll have to canabalize a kit. The floor pan from New roadster has the shifter gate in the floor for a very rear set shifter. It won’t do so we will toss that…

well

maybe we will save it for something else. So iirc I have multiple 32 ford kits and parts to choose from( hopefully the box is not at the bottom of the pile) so I think the 5 window floor pan is pretty plain so I can plunk my shifter hole down where it’s needed.
as for actual work I decided (as should anyone using the 29/30 kit) to toss the metal axle pins in the trash and to use some good old 1/16 rod to affix the wheels. So once I find my low tack fun tack to affix the wheels temporarily I’ll be able to get the frame and suspension up on wheels to check my ride height. I had a thought to make a highboy roadster( it was short lived) I’ll most likely end up doing a nice wedge channel.

The last pic is not quite where I want it yet… I just sat down and placed some parts to get a general vibe for the car.

Lastly a question: as the external dimensions of the engine are quite similar between the engine sizes should I build the early 50’s rocket in green, the red rocket or the golden rocket? I have it in green atm but that’s only a quick dunk in the purple pond to rectify.
lemme know your thoughts . The car is a blank slate I have not even looked at a colour yet.

Great start. Kits provide the material to follow the vision. Kitbashing allows you to create whatever you want.

Well said Bob.

Great success! I found the piece I’m looking for! It will get some trimming and fettling but it was in the top box so I didn’t have to forage too far.

A little nip a little tuck, a bend here and a bend there. And the floor pan is acceptable. I tossed in a half built chebby to make sure I had the right setback of the pan and proper clearance of the trans. I’ll have to temp assemble the rocket and test fit that. And of course the ride height will need attending too. But I have some tricks up my sleeve somewhere… now where did I put that jacket that had sleeves with tricks up them?

Last one for the night! Channelled just right, bottom of body is dead even with bottom of frame, I’ll lower the front about an inch to have a little nose down rake. Just have to check the oil pan level and make sure I still have good driveshaft geometry.
