If I’m using acrylic base coat, which is better. Also I’d prefer to use 1k so that I don’t have to worry about the activation solution.

Is it regular acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane base?  A 2k clear will  be very durable and less prone to chips.   Maybe you can give us more info.  What brand is the paint you are using?  As stated by someone else; follow what the paint manufacturer recommends.  If you can get a spec sheet by downloading it that's going to spell out what you need.

  If it's just Tamiya acrylic enamel, I would use the Duplicolor engine enamel clear.  When I did my model building service I used Tamiya acrylic and clear coated with Duplicolor engine enamel clear.  Gives a great finish, does not run.  Never had any problems with that.

Have you got any pics of anything you shot with that Duplicolor clear?  I love the high gloss look you get with an enamel…

Those look GREAT!  Have you had any issues shooting it over anything at all?  I assume it’s not particularly ‘hot’?
