Musclecarbuilder Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I honestly prefer any kind of Mopar over a 68 Shelby GT500, but this is one of my non-Mopar favorites. I figure I could show ya'll what I do when I build a model. I've built this kit at least twice before, the detail is very toy-like. So I decided to mate the body to AMT's 1967 Mustang Fastback. I plan to paint it Lime Gold with white stripes. Like this: I started by test-fitting a taped together interior/undercarriage. It actually fit on the 68 body like it was meant for it. Then I cut out the inner fenders from the '67 body and put them on the 68. I added some styrene stripes to the edges to make up for what I cut away. They fit pretty well on the 68 body.I bought the photo-etch kit for it and drilled out the grill for the PE part. Then I scribed the panel lines, sanded off the mold lines, and went through the sand/fill reapeat process for all the sink marks on the body. The wheels were not the correct wheels for the 68 Shelby. I found some 3D printed ones from Canuck 3D Models. I got them in yesterday and the look amazing. This is about what it looks like right now. I'll post another progress report soon. Thanks for looking.? 1
Keef Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I used the Revell 68 GT kit for its chassis, interior, and running gear for mine. It basically drops right in and lines up. 1
Duddly01 Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Great choice using the chassis and engine compartment for the build. I did the same thing for my latest builds. I now find myself picking up a 1967 Fastback kit from hobby lobby when I see one during their regular 40% off sales to have as donors. The interior components from the revell 1968 GT probably would be better for the interior components though that kit is harder to find, at least for me.

Yeah I thought about using the 68 GT interior, but I like the interior for the 67 better. I know its not correct but I think it looks pretty cool in the 68 Shelby. 1
vamach1 Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 One thing I notice on a lot of model builds of the 68GT500 is that they way the grill and bumper are molded as one piece many builders forget the inside of the “grille” part of the AMT kit should be body color.. I over looked this detail on the first two or three builds I did.
Bainford Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I'll be following your build. I have been planning a similar kit bash. Great to see there are decent wheels available. I have been looking unsuccessfully for a set of the 'good' AMT wheels. I built two of the AMT '68 Shelbys back in the 80s, both of them the molded-in-red Snake Bite issue, but they had different wheels. The first one I built had the wheel spokes molded correctly with the cavity in the outboard surface of the spoke. The other kit, seemingly the same issue, had the wheels retooled with solid spokes, probably like the ones in your kit. I was always curious about that.
Bills72sj Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 Following. I built one not to long ago. I too used the AMT 67 GT engine bay in my 68. The kit one was just too lame. I modified some Shelby wheels to suit my needs. I failed at the body colored grille surround, however. Maybe next time. 5

I'm also doing white stripes on the car so its going to definitely be a challenge to paint the grill piece.

The wheels I bought were 12 bucks with 10 shipping. The Shelby wheels aren't on his website so you'll have to email him to get them. His email is canuck3d@wylde.ca. He also has the correct ones for a 67 Shelby gt350. 1 1

Musclecarbuilder Posted January 23, 2024 Author Posted January 23, 2024 (edited) Hi guys! I know its been awhile since I put anything up on this post. I've had the Flu for the past week so I've gotten almost nothing done to the car. The only thing I've done is add styrene strip to the interior where there were big gaps between the door panels and the body. I added styrene strips to each door panel. The door panel on the right has an added styrene strip vs the one on the left that doesn't have an added strip.I sanded down the excess styrene and test-fitted the door panels on the body. There's still a small gap because I intend to put a driver side window on it. Then I did the same thing to the B-pillars on the interior door panels. The B-pillar on the right has added styrene vs the left one that has none. After a lot of sanding and test-fitting I got the B-pillars to fit exactly how I wanted them to. Thats as far as I've gotten so far, I'm hopefully gonna get to some more bodywork tomorrow and will have more to show in the next few days. Thanks for looking! Musclecarbuilder Posted February 2, 2024 Author Posted February 2, 2024 (edited) I've gotten some more work done on the Shelby, I haven't done much because I've been really busy but I figured I could show ya'll what I've done. I did a little bodywork on some scratches and low spots from sanding and scribing. I've also gotten everything else ready for primer, I'm waiting for it to heat up outside a little before I paint.Thats about all I've done so far, hopefully I can get primer on it by this weekend. I've got the lime gold paint on order so hopefully it'll be painted before March. Thanks for looking! Edited February 2, 2024 by Musclecarbuilder 1
NOBLNG Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Looking real good Will !? This is my favourite Mustang body style.?
Musclecarbuilder Posted February 15, 2024 Author Posted February 15, 2024 I have a small update for the Shelby, it's been raining like crazy this past couple of weeks so I didn't get a chance to primer until today. I ran out of primer before I hit every part with the airbrush so its not all done but still. The body turned out better than I thought it would. It doesn't need as much bodywork as I thought. The 3D wheels look even better with primer than they did without primer.I ran out of primer right about here?Oh my paint came in too. I think its gonna look great on this car. Its a little more green looking in the picture vs real life but its close. Thanks for looking!
Duddly01 Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Coming along nicely. That 67 Mustang kit is such a nice kit to bash with many of the other lesser kits, isn't it? As you've seen in my posts, I have killed several of them, and have put many more in my stash to give their lives so other Mustangs can have a better life. I love those wheels too, need to see about a set. The ones in the 68 Shelby kit really don't do it justice.

Your WIP on your '66 is inspiring me to make one too!? The guy I got the wheels from was called Canuck3D Models. 1
