Dave Wood Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 I want to try using braided hose and fittings on my engines, I have detail master hose and fittings my question is how do you attach the fitting to the lets say fuel pump? when I put the an fitting on the hose (and thats a trick in its self) I slide the fitting to the end of the hose it closes up and theres no room to insert a stiff wire to hold it ( I hope that makes sence)I'm using DM 1302 hose and DM3022 Fittings also I was told that someone makes braided line with a solid wire inside to make what I'm trying to do easyer is that true? Thanks Dave

Thanks Dave Hey Dave. Personally I dont use detail master fittings or hose but I can probably help you here. First make up your fittings to fit your particular application. use the wire that fits the back of the fitting and use a small amount of super glue and the wire in the fitting shallow allowing for the hose to fit later. paint it the color you desire (tamiya clear red and blue work best for me. I generally make up one end of the hose and glue it in place by drilling a small hole just big enough for the wire to push into (fuelpump etc)I then lay out the hose to the other point and glue the fitting in place and work the hose into the premade fitting. clear as mud right?? I use Protechs solid core braided hose (by far the best hose on the market) and RB Motion's fittings and have had very little trouble

Steven Zimmerman Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I don't use the aftermarket braided hose at all, although I've been thinking of trying the Pro tech stuff. I go to a fabric store such as Jo Annes ,etc. and buy their round braided elastic cord. Looks more realistic, flexes without kinking,CHEAPER(several yards fer 'bout a buck.) comes in black or white) easier to thread through the fittings.... I color mine with a silver magic marker-real braided line is not shiny. One trick, put a small drop of superglue on the cord where you want to cut it and let it dry, prevents unravelling and fuzzy ends. Cut it at an angle with a SHARP X acto knife for easier threading through the fittings.....Also for cheap fittings,go to your local craft store and check out various sizes of crimp beads in the jewelry section.Get the more expensive ones, they look better(not THAT expensive, either) they're not completely 'accurate' but still look pretty good,IMHO....perfectly duplicates those slide-over decorative hose clamp covers we've all seen at local car shows. When using magic markers to color your hose fittings,do this last,or even after attachment if possible, the color wears off VERY easily, and re-touching them up just doesn't look as good(you can take my word for it on this un)............Steve Zimmerman aka the'Z'man..................................
Dave Wood Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Dave, first off i'd strongly recommend scrapping the Detail Master braided line and switching over to Pro Tech's stuff. Charlies braided line is simply THE BEST on the market hands down in both realistic appearance and quality as well as user friendliness. the Detail Master fittings and hard line is nice stuff, but the braid is horrible. Pro Tech also offers fittings as well and Charlie is very helpful in getting the right pieces you need. there was a how-to article on that "other" scale model magazine done by Clay Kemp on using both Pro Tech and Detail Master lines and fittings that is very helpful. i'd recommend searching out that issue if you don't already have it. another tip i have is using red and light blue Sharpie's for coloring the fittings and line where needed. it's quick and easy and has the look of anodizing. Dave Already did Dave I'm waiting for some Pro Tech line and Fittings, should be here this week and I did find that artical in that other magazine,Thanks for the tip!
