LDO Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 It’s part of the 1/8 scale McLaren M23. A guy on Facebook wants measurements in order to build a copy from scratch. I think it would be very difficult to get enough measurements build a copy without having the real part in his hands. The back side has compound curves that would would be very difficult to measure properly. Can this part be copied in resin at a price that would not be cost prohibitive?
redscampi Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 (edited) I have the 1/8 John Player Special and had a look at the transaxle in it hoping that it might be similar enough to be modified into what you need since parts are a little bit easier to come by for that kit. But, no joy, it's a completely different design. If that part splits in half as it appears I don't see why it couldn't be easily and economically cast in resin. redscampi Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 This guy might be a potential source: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/willrace-scale-models Unlike most stuff on Shapeways his prices don't seem outlandish. He doesn't list the transaxle but may have a file to print from.
LDO Posted February 4, 2024 Author Posted February 4, 2024 This is made of two pieces. I also thought of the JPS Lotus. I’m sending all kinds of measurements and photos, but I don’t know if it will help the guy.

Yes, particularly if you don't care if the copies are solid resin, not a two-part assembly as is OEM. Any reasonably competent resin caster can easily make a silicone mold with the split-line where it is on your original, and cast as many as you could possibly want from that.
