Sledsel Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 (edited) I did an experiment today on an interior I wanted black, but in my experiences flat black and satin black never had the right sheen. I took this Mustang interior tub and primed it with black primer and then coated it with vinyl dye/paint. I think it came out great, I have some red and some gray vinyl dye I'm going to try on some junk interiors. I will post results. Edited February 18, 2024 by Sledsel 5
JollySipper Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 I like using vinyl dye for interiors! I've used it on a few now...... It does have just the right shine to it! It looks and works better if you prime first..... 4
Tim08 Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 (edited) What is the vinyl dye? Looks good. Edited February 16, 2024 by Tim08

peteski Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 (edited) It is actually a type of paint, not a dye. Dye basically gets absorbed into the material being dyed. Thinks of tie-dyed t-shirts. This stuff (like paint) remains on the surface. But it adheres to the painted surface really well, and it is flexible. I used the white color spray to paint whitewalls on vinyl tires of a Pocher 1:8 scale car. I use the SEM brand (bought at a body shop supplies store) Edited February 16, 2024 by peteski 5
Andrew McD Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 The black interior is very convincing! I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for posting! 2
Straightliner59 Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 Yep! Going to be giving this a look! Thanks for sharing! I've seen the cans, but never given it a try.
peteski Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 Just a warning: These paints are fairly "hot". If sprayed on heavily they might slightly craze some kit's plastics. 2
NOBLNG Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 And don’t forget to leave the windows down until it is completely dry!? 1
Speedpro Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 I'v found that Mr Hobby Super Clear Matt over flat, satin, semi gloss has given a very convincing vinyl appearance.
customline Posted March 6, 2024 Posted March 6, 2024 Vinyl top paint was available way back in the day. I used it on a '72 Fury I was going to flip. I wish I could remember more.....?....it had a bad transmission.....I remember that...?
FoMoCo66 Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 My father used vinyl dye paint on the top of his 66 ford falcon to go from white to black. My uncle also actually sprayed his whole intirior with that vinyl stuff to go from green to black on his Buick. I will post my method on a separate post as to not clutter this up and not take the purpose away from this post.
