Billy's 78 Z28 By Revell

Recommended Posts

The Mystery surrounding the upcoming release of this kit has got me wondering what exactly it will be... 1:24th according the box so must be the old Monogram tooling with maybe new hardtop body? Will it have all the racing goodies? 100 parts count so maybe? The Revell website indicates that it's 1:25th scale though. What are we getting? It's a mystery but I'm anticipating a great kit nevertheless because I liked the Monogram kit and I'll be happy no matter what it is.

I noticed:

* 1/24 scale on what appears to be the actual box art. I would trust that before the description on their webpage.

* 100+ parts, including new parts!!

* Skill level 4

* “1979” and not 1980 or 1981.

I would say all indicators point to the “79 kit and not the snapper, which is great IMO. I’m excited about this one. With what’s available in the aftermarket now, you can build it in almost any color combination and with any wheel option.

I think that kit has T-Tops.

Yeah, you might be right... I hope that it has a re-tooled hardtop body...that would be great. the body would be the "New Parts" they mention on the cover because I can't think of anything new they could put in the kit to match the film car. ? license plates? I don't think that would qualify as new parts though...

I grafted a top from an AMT 64 Impala onto this car in the early 90's. The shapes worked perfect. It was originally a Pro-street build then about 10 years ago I rebuilt it as a factory stock replica.

I hope the newly-tooled parts are a hardtop body and flat hood.

That's what I'm hopeful to see, the flat hood would be cool also. I think during filming atleast two cars were used, one had a flat hood and another had a Z hood. If the parts count is correct on the box we may only get the "film car" parts only. That's disappointing but understandable.

If they did a new body I'd suspect they'd also have to do new glass to go with it.

Maybe some underhood details that are not molded to the body.

Well, Now We know. Flat Hood, No T-Tops, otherwise it's the old 1/24 Monogram Camaro. But, that's a Pretty good Kit, so I'm pleased.

now the real question : did Revell modify the original mold, and will we be offered again the T-tops Camaro ?

Yes, this release will have a normal roof, there is also a separate flat hood that did not replace either of the originally supplied hoods in the kit. We will have to see if the T tops ever return.

The T-tops in this kit fit poorly. (Just like the real ones...) And I for one, would be happy to see the altered mold stay this way going forward.

There are plenty of the T-top kits on the secondary market, and it very nice to have the Coupe.

Fully agree.  I've never been interested in getting one of the original T-top versions of this kit.  But now with the solid roof and the flat hood, it's an easy conversion to turn into a "mainstreamer" regular Camaro.

Kind of ironic that Revell had to add the flat hood so they could match the incorrect movie car.

Except for those front fender flares being molded to the body with nothing behind them. You can easily cut them off but building up the section of fender in front of the wheel opening isn't exactly "easy". I'm used to doing major bodywork on customs and I'd think at least twice before attempting it.

Agreed, @Can-Con. Way back in 94, I converted Monogram's 70 Trans Am into an Esprit. It was the first time I'd ever done body work as serious as that, and it was a challenge to get the curvature/radius of the wheel arch right on all 4 corners! Major pain to get the centre ridge down the filled-in hood scoop hole to blend in nicely. First time I hand-painted narrow whitewalls, and first time I made a vinyl roof. End product was very similar to this example:

Good point.  Fully admit that I wasn't paying attention to those.  Since the 1:1 parts are bolt on, I had it in my head that they were also separate in the kit.

I’m actually happy that the T-tops have been filled in since they never fit that well anyway.

It’s great news that the reissue will include all of the optional parts from the previous issues. The supercharger and BBS wheels are really nice for kitbashing.
