Leo64 Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Hello, has anyone seen a wheel that looks like the one in the attached pic, either in a kit, aftermarket or even a 3D file? My dad had an old Willys Jeep, that my brother now has, that I want to try building a model of. I've got one of the reissued MPC GoldenHawk Jeep kits as a base, and found a 3D file for a 1954 Willys Jeep body that is real close to the style my dad had. The only thing I need to try and find is something like the aluminum wheels he had on it. I don't know the exact brand of wheel he bought, but they look just like the Enkei Mesh ones in the pic. I've tried looking online, and the closest I've come so far is an Enkei 92 wheel, but the mesh area is more flatter than the ones on the Jeep. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks. Steve A.
Rob Hall Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 (edited) Those look similar to wheels in some releases of the AMT '66 Mustang ht (70s-80s releases--Countdown Series and Barris)--not sure if the more recent issues have them...those were chromed, would need painted to look that way of course. The Tamiya Jeep Wrangler hardtop kit has something similar but of a much flatter design. Edited April 10, 2024 by Rob Hall

stitchdup Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 I would look at kits released in the 80 or 90s. If your searching for 3d files the style is called mesh usually but bbs or some japanese brands would bring up other options.
Can-Con Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 The MPC 3rd gen firebirds all had a set like that in them. Originally as the custom option but later as the GTA wheels. The same ones are in the "Switchers" '32 Ford kits, last reissued as the "Coke" delivery kit. The Monogram Buick GNX and some of their later 3rd gen Firebirds also have similar wheels but in 1/24 scale.

I did several different searches for 3D files using using different words like "mesh" "Enkei" "spoked" and came up with several of the BBS and JDM styles, but all that I found were too flat and had much bigger areas of the mesh. Sometimes doing a search depends on what the person that designed the wheels ends up calling it. I've seen several wheels that just used the general name of "Vintage Wheel", so that's why I was asking. I was hoping maybe someone had seen a 3D file somewhere, or knew of a kit that might have it. Thanks for the help though. Steve A.

Right now I'm just gather kits and parts to do the build at some point. Steve A. 1
Bills72sj Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 (edited) I have these for a project that have a similar pattern. They came in this box. I have no idea where you could find them. I also found a style closer to what you are looking for online. Edited April 12, 2024 by Bills72sj update
Mark Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 6 hours ago, Maindrian Pace said: Those are Appliance Wiremags. I was about to say that. My mom had a set of those on her '77 Cutlass Supreme. The original tires were put on with the whitewalls out, but we talked her into turning the next set to the inside and it looked a bunch better. The AMT '66 Mustang wheels are a different brand but are probably the closest thing to be found. They are NOT in issues produced after the mid-Eighties however. Adding some chrome rings to the front of them will make them more closely resemble the Appliance wheel.

Mr mopar Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 Try the Monogram Black dog catch or Sand shark !
Leo64 Posted April 16, 2024 Author Posted April 16, 2024 I want to thank everyone for their help with this. Most of the kits that were suggested, the wheels just weren't quite right for what I was looking for. I continued doing searches for 3D files that were available, and happened to find a wheel that was close. I may try contacting the seller and see if they might be able to modify their wheel to be closer to what I'm looking for. If they can't, I will probably just get the file and use it, or try to modify it myself. Anyways, thanks again for all the help offered. Steve A.
SandCrab Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Look at a monogram chaparral wheel. They are nearly flat. Outside sands off easily and take center out of a donor wheel to get proper width. The real wheel I believe you are looking for was offered by Vic Hickey in early 70’s.
Oldriginal86 Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Can you get a pic of the wheel, I’m sure someone on this forum knows or has what it is. Jeeps used the 5lug pattern with the large center hole. I would think this would be relative to truck wheels only.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I recognized them right away. Appliance wheels, popular in the 70's/80's. One of the first, if not the first, imported (Japan) aftermarket wheels. Decent quality with good prices. The speed shop I used to help out in sold a bunch of them. I think they went out of business in the early 90's. 1
