"Old School" OBS Chevy pickup build

Recommended Posts

Wondering if there'd be any interest in a build now that are easily available? It would be for  , ,, ,

'88 to "98 Chevy and GMC pickups Suburbans, Tahoes etc.

could be in the old school "sport truck" style from the '90s and '00s or more modern style with larger wheels, etc.

The kind of truck you'd see at a show, not a commercial style or daily driver.

AMT/MPC kits or Lindberg "Boyd's Hauler". Snap curbside or full detail kit.

I have a couple ideas I'll be starting to work on soon so anyone else ?

BTW, no deadline.

I dug my old '90 longbed out of storage a couple weeks ago and managed to pull a couple of resin copies from that grille I had scratch made for it around 30 years ago. Unfortunately, it came out of the mold in pieces and it no more.

I don't think I'll redo this one but I have blown apart an old 454SS gluebomb I picked up a couple years ago and will be rebuilding it in a late '90s style.

I was brainstorming this last night, And I think I have a pretty cool build in mind.

Three builds, actually.

A C3500 crewcab duallie, using 3D printing and parts from my OBS wrecking yard.

A 20ft car hauler trailer, fully printed

An AMT C1500 454SS, with a number of upgrades.

It's ambitious, and will take a while, but should look cool when done.

I hope.

Maybe I'll play. I own 2, drive one daily, and have plenty of kits and gloobombs to pick from.

Then again, I barely have time to post my verbal idiocy on here, so maybe not.   ;)

Well you can just glue the engine block halves together and call it good, Bill. ?

But seriously, love to have you join.

That sounds like it'll be a pretty impressive rig, Dan.

Ok, so, here's what I'm starting with for the first truck.

It's missing a couple suspension parts but I can cast copies from one of the unbuilt kits I have.

It'll be a silver over white build with a traditional 4/6 drop. Gatorback tires on Ferrari wheels. Probably keep the 454 but swap the intake out for a F.I unit. I'm definitely going for the '90s "Sport Truck Magazine" look with this one ?

Gotta love that air dam used as a visor glued on with a 1/2 tube of glue. ?

Anyway, this is how it's sitting as of an hour ago.

So I was looking at my 454SS kit last night and brainstorming.

I'll be building this part of the project first.

Truck itself will most likely be silver and black, with some sort of a "pinstripe" in a bright colour. Still thinking about that.

Definitely no chrome.

Interior various shades of black/grey, with some of the exterior highlight colour brought in.

3D printing seats for it. I have a few different thoughts here.

Also doing the newer style dash in this one.

Body mods will include a rear roll pan, rear spoiler, new style grille, smooth front bumper, and a splitter...which I'll probably have to make from styrene.

Wheels will be a two piece, in a scale 19" diameter. Big brakes behind them.

Engine will be a 572 with a supercharger. Upgrading the transmission, rear end, and exhaust too.

And the entire thing needs to be lower. Not slammed, but definitely lower.

Lots to do, lots to print.

Sounds like my cup of tea! My last OBS would definitely fit right in this category! And Dan, your plan sound much as my build recipe?

You and I are on the same page with these trucks!

But mine will not look like your last one. Will have a different vibe for sure.

Did a little work on the cab.

Got the awful "add-ons" removed. The top of the windshield frame was damaged by all the glue so I'll be repairing that along with the back of the cab roof and front edge of the hood. All glue damaged.

I also started fitting one of my resin GMC grille surrounds. I managed to get 3 copies out of the mold, that should be enough to do me for a while. One for this truck, one for a replica of my brother in laws [who's passed] truck that will be a gift to his daughter and one left. I think I'll refine that one and make it fit the new kits and cast a few copies of that.

If I play, I'll most likely do a curbside of my '89 GMC longbed daily.

She looks like something that shouldn't run, with the typical self-stripping GM waterbase fleet white from the late 1980s, which green moss has apparently developed a taste for. Where the paint is down to the primer, surface rust is coming through, and after a ditzy chick ran a light in front of me, the virgin bodywork isn't any more. The upholstery on what's left of the bench seat is a fender cover and a pink bath towel...but she has a brand new windshield and 4 fat M&S blackwall radials.

It should be interesting trying to do her appearance justice.  B)

I'm ready to get this party started. After being at the show on the weekend, I figure this build can be a great exercise toward all of the things you and I discussed Steve. Lets' rock this one.

Maybe I'll do like you're doing Steve and ressurect a dead project. That could be a lot of fun.

Did you print that Phantom grille, Steve O ?

I don't remember seeing any before besides the Revell S-10 one.

The Testor's Van Hauler has it, but that's in 1/24 scale.
