Can-Con Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 (edited) I've been working on this for a couple weeks now, you may have seen it in the "community builds" section. I already have 2 involved projects on the go but sometimes you get an idea in your head that just won't wait. ? Anyway, I plan to build a couple of these trucks and this is the first. Started with a glue bomb I picked up at a show a few years ago. Rough but almost complete. For it, I cast a couple copies of the GMC style grille surround I made from scratch over 30 years ago. I did get 3 copies but the original was old and fragile and didn't survive the process. Plans are for a silver over white 2-tone, the traditional "4/6" drop and riding on a set of Ferrari 5-spokes with Gatorback tires. Here's what I'm starting out with , , , The front edge of the roof and hood were damaged by the 1/2 tube of glue used to attach junk to them. The hood was easily repaired with putty but the roof needed the area over the windshield rebuilt. I'm also making the rear pan from scratch. Edited May 18, 2024 by Can-Con 5
slusher Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 Nice start Steve , I like this kit and built several years ago.. 1
Mike Slapattack Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 I love '90s sport trucks. This will be a cool project to watch! 1
Flatout Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Great start Steve…always enjoy seeing what you’re up to. Nice work saving the hood and roof. Will be watching this one? 1
Can-Con Posted May 20, 2024 Author Posted May 20, 2024 (edited) Got the bodywork done except for a couple pin holes in the grille surround. Removed the rub strips on the sides and have it in primer. I think I'll start paint today. Edited May 20, 2024 by Can-Con 5
kelson Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Nice work so far, sometimes rebuilders are more enjoyable to do than a unbuilt kit.? 2
Can-Con Posted June 17, 2024 Author Posted June 17, 2024 Been busy with work but I've has a few minutes here and there to work on this. Pretty well ready for some clear coat but I do have a couple little decals to apply first. 4
espo Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Great looking paint design. Like the stance as well. 1

slusher Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Sharp paint scheme and I like those Ferrari wheels ?
Can-Con Posted June 22, 2024 Author Posted June 22, 2024 (edited) Had some time to work on this again today. Did up the front suspension. Was missing one of the spindles so I made a matched pair from sprue. Found some of the right size to mount the wheels and cut 2 L shaped pieces. Then cut them to length with the posts that the wheels mount to up against the upper suspension arms. The I used 3 pieces of brass rod to make a simple steering linkage. This also had the added benefit of a slightly lower drop compared to just flipping the kit's spindles. I also ground a divot directly over the rear end pumpkin and did some trimming on the springs and their front mounts to get the rear as low as I was wanting. But I also had to grind some from the insides of the wheel houses to clear those 35 series tires. So, here's the final mockup with the suspension set and the paintwork done except for the final polishing and detailing. Edited June 22, 2024 by Can-Con 6
DJMar Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 Really nice job bringing this one back from the scrap pile. I love the paint scheme, those graphics are spot on 90s! 1
Iraceitall Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 I love these, when I used to build long ago it seemed like it's all I built! I need a few more of the older ones again! My favorite I ever did combined an extended cab and a shortbed, in Testor's Boyd Grape Pearl aerosol. Time for a new one. Thanks for sharing this sweet build and the inspiration! 1
Can-Con Posted July 1, 2024 Author Posted July 1, 2024 Finished the interior. Wanted to do it in grey but the old paint kept bleeding through the primer. Happy with the dark red though. It goes well with the exterior of the truck. 6
Tabbysdaddy Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 For some reason the red dashboards are the only ones that don't totally disintegrate in the Florida sun. My mom's red 89 looks almost brand new, my grey 93 had no top until I remade it with fiberglass cloth and resin. Good looking truck, I like the wheels. 2
Can-Con Posted July 3, 2024 Author Posted July 3, 2024 I figured I'd put the most radical '90s Chevy engine in it so, what would that be? Well the Corvette ZR-1' s LT5. Took some grinding on the crossmember under the engine and shortening the hump in the oil pan to get it to fit in there but it finally fit. I also scratched up an insert got the grille from sheet stock and strip stock. 5
Iraceitall Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 This build brings back memories of Sport Truck magazine and the smell of Testors spray paint... 2

slusher Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Real nice engine choice,Steve. Sure does not look like the glue bomb Iyou started with 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 From the text in the posts, it sounds pretty cool...but the photos won't load right now... Crickets... Oh wait...now they're starting to come through... Crickets... OK. Cool!!! Great project. 1
chris chabre Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 LOVE IT!!!! Takes me back to being a kid in the early 90s reading truckin, mini truckin, sport truck etc. My favorite era of custom trucks is the late 90s to 05ish when the big wheel wars hit 3
Modlbldr Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 Just read through this entire rebuild. Fine work bringing this one back to life. Great paint and details! Looks just like they did back then. Fantastic! Later- 1
