Duddly01 Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 I let my wife pick my next build and she decided next is a 1950 Chevy 3100. Picked up this kit last year and finally getting to it. First impression is it is a pretty nice kit. Good thing after the AMT 57 Thunderbird which is really not a good kit. As usual will have working headlights, taillights and gauge lights which has kind of become trademark of any build I do. preparing and testing for LEDs removing door handles, wipers, etc that will be replaced with resin or photo-etch cut in the openings for the wood stakes cut the end so the wood bed can be slid in after paint separately. what I am hoping to make it look like 5

She even says I have to do the wood side slats. I am going to be learning how to make the seat look like old leather and the woodgrain for the bed. Will be new for me. Probably will make the side slats out of bass wood.
Zippi Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 Love these old AD trucks. That's a nice looking pickup your going to memic. Looking good so far. 1
NOBLNG Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 Nice looking project. These were very nice looking trucks. Much nicer looking than the Fords or Dodges of the day…in my eye at least. Carry on.? 1

That’s what my wife says, personally I like the 1953 Ford that was another choice in the stash but she prefers the Chevy. And that with all the FORD Mustangs in the garage!

espo Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 I like how you made the bed floor able to slide in and out. That should make the detailing of the floor easier to do. 1

Duddly01 Posted July 14, 2024 Author Posted July 14, 2024 Got some work done. Started assembling some components for paint. The engine and chassis and pedals for the interior. I love that the pedals are separate and not molded in. The chassis is really nice. I did however run into one thing I do not like at all. They engineered the kit so pieces of the body are added after the interior leaving huge incorrect seams. I can not live with that, I glued and will be filling the seams. It will be a fight getting the interior in but it is what it is. What were they thinking ?!? 2
dino246gt Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Looks like a great project! I have an old rust-free door out in the barn if you need one? LOL 2 1

I haven't cut open doors yet. I cut open trunks just so I have a place to hide the LED battery, trying to make it look like a spare. Still have to figure out how I am going to hide the battery for this kit. 1

I dug up an old hollow tire out of my stash that might at least mostly work. You'll see here if I accomplish it. 1
DJMar Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 I love any '47-'53 Chevy truck. I also love that AMT kit, even though it seems to require a LOT of cleanup and prep work. I've got one in the stash that probably has 3 oz of putty in the frame sinkholes! Following this with interest. 1

Duddly01 Posted July 18, 2024 Author Posted July 18, 2024 Has anyone found any sort of tiny chain that would be good for making the tailgate chains? Trying to figure out what I need for detailing.

Trying to figure out what I need for detailing. Once upon a time, I found some very small, very delicate jewelry chain that seemed perfect for tailgate chains. It was a bear to work with, even when I had younger eyes and more nimble fingers. You can find 1mm jewelry chain online, I'd bet Amazon has it. That's as close as you're going to get, I think, unless you want to find some .8mm stuff. I generally use coated telephone wire now, to replicate the rubber covers you can put on chains. 1

Ah, that might be a thought. Considering the era I would like to go with chain but for a future more modern or hot-rodded build that sounds perfect.
Duddly01 Posted July 19, 2024 Author Posted July 19, 2024 (edited) Created hood hinges, had to cut and create channels in firewall. I will camouflage when I go to detailing. Added magnets to help close hood. I really like to pose the hood open and still have the ability to take it off so I make my hinges so they can be. Drilled bed for tailgate chains. Started filling body seams for odd panels. I figured out how I am going to hide the LED battery as best as I can. I had a hollow tire in my spares. I really hate the filler panels. Such big noticeable seams to fill. drilled for tiny tailgate chains for some odd reason his kit didn’t come with a spare. In my reference pics the all have a spare under the bed at the very back. I cut a hollow tire to camo the LED battery. I am going to resin cast one of the rims to make a face for the spare too. Edited July 19, 2024 by Duddly01 1
Zippi Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 Your progress is coming right along there Donald. Those hood hinges look really nice. 2
