Lancia Stratos Turbo Gr.5 "Marlboro" (Tamiya, 1/24)

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

this is another well-known Tamiya kit.

I chose the lesser-known "Marlboro" livery, as it was used in long-distance races (e.g. Giro d'Italia) in 1976. The much better known "Alitalia" livery of the same car drove 1 year later.

Decals are from Reji. Which - although very thin - were easy to process. Unfortunately, a few little things are missing, such as the driver names or the glare protection for the windshield.

I used TS-101 and TS-36. On top of that, my usual "hardware store clear coat".

Built OOB except for the exhaust pipes made of wire end ferrules.

Not perfect, but it looks an interesting model in the display case.

Please let me know what you think of it.

Many thanks guys, I appreciate it!

I love it Tommy. Your "hardware store" clear must have some special sauce in it as the finish you accomplished is impeccable.

I love gr 5 racers and this Stratos finds a way to look unique among it's peers.

Haha... 😆 Thanks Pierre, I am sure that a man of your capabilities is well aware of the fact that basically 80% of the result is in the (preparation/ painting/ sanding/ polishing) process and it's proper execution, and only a small part comes from the material quality. It gets easier when it comes to white paint jobs. I am using Tamiya TS-101 which is basically a glossy white primer to be used on hard-to-cover plastic molded in colors like red, yellow and so on. The good thing is you have a proper primer AND a nice shiny white basecoat in just one step. Just keep dust and other flaws out of it and the nice gloss will make sure that you have a great surface to have decals or further paint jobs on.

Applying the clear after that will just be the final step to conserve the decals, but most of the gloss is already there before it!

Really nice job on this kit Thomas.  You nailed that red color. And amazing decal work...especially over the front louvers.  The first time  (and only time)  I saw a Stratos in person I fell in love with it.  A worthy addition to your collection..indeed.   Thanks for the tip on TS101. I have been eyeballing it at my LHS and now know its worth the  purchase.
