TracerB Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Hello everyone. I'm currently struggling my way through the Takom 1/16 scale army jeep. I'm putting my own spin on it by not building it military style. I was wondering if anyone can help with what color to paint the tires. (they're gray plastic like everything else in this kit.) Flat black just don't look realistic. Any help with a make/color or even a make/color/mix would be most helpful. Thanks, Tracy
iamsuperdan Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 I use Tamiya's Rubber Black. It's available in both jars and as a spray. Looks pretty good to me. 4
peteski Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Yes, that is basically a shade of dark gray. As the name implies it is a good tire color and has the right amount of sheen (not just dead flat).
64SS350 Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 I tried the Tamiya Rubber Black, to me it seemed a little flat, like racing rubber, but maybe my primer base affected the results. I'll have to try a different primer next time, because it sprayed very well. Here I used Dupli-Color flat black, it actually leaves a slight sheen.
Exotics_Builder Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Usually Mr Finishing Surface Black 1500 Primer, followed by Tamiya Tire Black. Then if needed, will do a semi-gloss clear. If decaling a tire, then after the black, I apply gloss clear then decal then semi-gloss or flat clear depending on the tire.
stavanzer Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 I always liked the long gone Pactra "Hot Rod Primer" for painting tires. Never to be seen again, but it was a great colour. 1
jaymcminn Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Tamiya Rubber Black is excellent. I also used Tamiya "Oil Stain" weathering pastels around the treads on these. 3
Deathgoblin Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 I'm working on a 1953 Corvette Kit, and the tampo printed white walls were printed on the wrong side. Paint wouldn't come off without damaging the tire, so I decided to paint over it. I mixed semigloss and flat black about 50/50 with a dab of leather brown. Matches perfectly.
El Roberto Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 I like Tamiya or AK NATO black. It has a slight brownish black finish.

bobss396 Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 TS-68 is pretty good, I used that and like it over the TS-82 tire paint.
vintagerpm Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Tamiya, AK, Ammo, Velejo, & others all make an acrylic "tire black" or "rubber black". In addition, Tamiya has a lacquer spray can of it.
mrm Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 What I use is SEM interior paint in flat black. It is a specially formulated professional grade interior die. You can literally spray the door panel in your real car and it will hold to years of use. It's cool because it looks great as a leather interior or on tires. The best part is that it doesn't like other paints underneath but can take pretty much anything over it. So no primer or anything under it. Spray it straight on plastic, resin or whatever. But then you can paint with whatever you want over it. 2
