Jim B Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 (edited) I am working on the Lindberg 1964 Dodge 330, and I am planning on using the Slant 6 in the car, making it a nothing special, get around town kind of commuter car. However, I am a little confused as to what color to paint the engine. The instructions say Chrysler Engine Blue, yet they show a red engine on the box. Go figure. I checked here: And it seems to confirm that the Slant 6 should be red in 1964, but yet again, Internet searches show red & blue Slant 6 engines. Might this have something to do with the "size" of the engine? I'm kind of confused. ? Also, they say to paint the transmission Chrysler Engine Blue. Edited August 19, 2024 by Jim B
1972coronet Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 1964 225 is Chrysler Engine Red ( I believe that the 170 is the same colour, same year). Transmission - manual or Torqueflite - is as-cast : cast iron for manual (and pre-1962 A-466 (Powerflite) and A-488 (Torqueflite) ), aluminium for 1976 & later manuals (all) , 1960-c.1984 A-904 G & LA , and 1962-c.1989 A-727. Bellhousing is engine colour for all manuals , with a semi-gloss black inspection plate. The blue Slant Sixes came along for the 1970 model year (a different shade vs. the "1972 blue") , both 198 and 225. 1
Jim B Posted August 19, 2024 Author Posted August 19, 2024 Thanks, John. I appreciate it. So, the engine should be red for 1964, and it sounds like the automatic transmission should be a steel color. 2
Mike C Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I built one of those years ago. This is how it came out, it's a beater. 3
espo Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Check Google Images and see what is out there as to colors. The slant sixes that I have even seen where painted red weather they were the 170 or the 225 displacements, but in this world there always seems to be exceptions. At one time, and probably not in this body style, MoPar did build some all-aluminum slant sixes. 1
Jim B Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 So here is my completed Dodge Leaning Tower of Power: Not a bad little engine kit, actually. Now to figure out what to do with the rest of the car. What interior goes with a beige car? ? 4

I'll have to see what I have in the Paint Department. Oddly, the directions show a front bench seat, but the plastic has front bucket seats. Go figure. Edited August 23, 2024 by Jim B
espo Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Google Images will have lots of pictures of real cars to base your color choice on. I know a few of them were built with a beige interior using a couple different shades of beige as they would do on whatever other colors they offered. The base line cars would usually have a heavy rubber floor covering. 1

They made both aluminum blocks and heads but never combined them on the same engine and from reading I've done on it, it's not a good idea to combine the two, for reasons I don't quite recall. These were only put in some of the early Valiants and Lancers and they were all 170s.

I actually owned a '64 Dodge 330 with a slant six. It had a couple more doors though. I had a '63 too. Both cars had red engines. The '63 had a rubber floor mat that destroyed the floor, and I think the '64 had a carpet, but it was around 40 years ago, so I can't be sure on that. 1
