NOBLNG Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 (edited) Personally, I think they should have thought up a new name for it.…or maybe re-use Polara or Monaco.? Edited August 23, 2024 by NOBLNG 5
Falcon Ranchero Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 What I didn't like about it is that a 2-door wasn't an option; but I heard Dodge is bringin' the Charger back with optional 2-doors but it's Electric so the "Charger" name no longer refers to a man on horse, but to the plug in which charges the vehicle
iamsuperdan Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 The new Charger will be available in both 2 and 4 door varieties. Although they've only shown 2 door versions so far. Personally, I don't care. The number of doors makes no difference to me. Probably because obtaining a newer Charger has never been on my radar. I can say though that BMW's naming conventions and numbers of doors on their vehicles has driven me nuts for years. 3 Series was split into two models. So now the 3 Series is 4 door only and the 2 door version of the exact same car is a 4 series. Unless you get the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which is also a 4 door. And then the 5 Series is a 4 door, and the 6 Series is a 2 door. Again, unless you get a 6 Series Gran Coupe, and then you have a 4 door which is essentially based on the 5 series, also a 4 door. 1 1

1972coronet Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 The concept Dodge Charger from c.1997 was also a 4 door. Back then I asserted : Should be called a Coronet ! 2
JollySipper Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 It still performs like a muscle car......... Actually BETTER than a lot of muscle cars! and You get to use it as a family vehicle, too. I've known a lot of people that would hate on a four door no matter the make. 1

I know even four-door classic cars are becoming popular; just add a set of Cragar rims and you got the coolest ride on the block, no matter the number of doors. 1

David G. Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I have one and I'm quite happy with it, thank you. When I brought it home for the first time, my wife said, "It looks like Dodge that Intrepid you wanted!." So I can see the point of some people taking issue with Chrysler using the name "Charger" for a performance sedan, but what about Lincoln slapping its name on an "upscale" pickup truck? and don't even get me started on the Cadillac SRX and XT series! But no matter what Chrysler decided to call the Charger, I likely would have bought it even if it was called an Intrepid or Polara. My decision was based more on appearance, quality and performance, than the name. I literally drove by a car lot one day, saw it sitting there and decided to take a test drive based on its "curb appeal". David G. 2

I believe classic 4dr cars are becoming more popular because their two door brethren command much higher prices and that they're more plentiful. Even station wagon versions have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Edited August 23, 2024 by John M. 1

I was also introduced (to the world) in 2006, but I have known the current Charger gen has been around longer than 2015 ?that meme was just random from the inter-web Edited August 23, 2024 by Falcon Ranchero 2
Falcon Ranchero Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 I think our conclusion here is that the number of doors doesn't make the car, the performance and reliability are the most important things. I know some people dislike the Charger name being applied to a four-door because of the historic lineage of the original Chargers and I understand that. I also know some people couldn't care less about the new gen being a four door, because really, who cares. The car "evolved" to fit the new world, and I think there's something interesting about that. 1
espo Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I remember when the present Charger body style came out in a four door, and I thought "what are they thinking?" Well after owning a '10 Charger RT with AWD for nine years and just shy of 100k miles that I traded for a left-over end of year '18 Charger GT model, now the AWD could only be had with the 6 cylinder. I'm going to ride this one out before I think about the new ones. I have usually always had some sort of performance car or truck in the garage and for my driving needs I have found why so many law enforcement depts. like the handling of these cars. While the 6 cylinder isn't the animal the Hemi is, it has no problem handling 90% of the other cars on the road and the 24 to 25 mpg fuel average that I have gotten over the 48k miles I have owned it is a nice bonus with today's fuel costs. 1
Mark Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 With older cars, the four-doors aren't as popular or desirable. They are an alternative however. With some of the more popular collector cars like tri-Five Chevies, guys are picking up solid four-door cars and converting them with donor panels from lesser condition two-doors. The wheelbase is the same, sedan roofs are the same, but still it's a bunch of work. Station wagons are a different matter, those picked up in popularity a while back.
Tabbysdaddy Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I always liked four doors better. I don't have to open my door and lean forward to let someone in and the door itself only weighs 3/4 of a ton instead of the full ton. 2
DaveB Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I'm still amazed that even after 18 years of a 4 door Charger, people still can't let it go. 3
Jon Haigwood Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I always refer to them as a Magnum with a sorts roof 1
CapSat 6 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I have owned a Magnum and a Challenger. I can speak from experience that this is an excellent chassis- these were the best two cars I have ever owned, hands down. Relatively easy to work on, dependable, truly fantastic highway performance, fun to drive, and true head turners. When the Charger came out in 2006, people yelled about it being a 4 door. The realities of the market, even then were that sales of 2 door always had their limit, whereas 4 doors would sell much better, thereby justifying the investment. 2 doors have become much more niche since the ‘80’s. Blame the buying public! ? I still see a lot of Chargers around here. Many are just daily drivers now, but you still see some that are obviously enthusiast cars, too. You can usually hear them before you see them! The Charger makes a killer Police car. We have a black-on-black in my town, and it looks brutal. My Dad was a Ford guy- he used to like to tease me about Mopars whenever he could. Years ago, he started in on me about one of his friends with the Philly PD who just got “one of those Mo-pars you like” assigned to him. All I said was: “yeah, what does he think of it?”. My Dad couldn’t shift gears fast enough- he spat out “oh, he thinks it’s wicked!”. ? 1
Mark Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 After the Charger name was applied to a detrimmed Cordoba, and later to an Omni 024, putting it in a four-door wasn't so much of a problem... 2
Jon Haigwood Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I am not a fan of "electric" Mustangs either 1 2
TarheelRick Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Four door vehicles have their place in the market. Yet, I still have an issue with almost every pickup on the showroom floor being a crew-cab. They are basically a four-door sedan on a truck chassis. I own a 2022 F-150 and it is a four door. Admittedly it does have its benefits, but compared to the 2018 SuperCab I owned it is a bear to park, especially in those parking garages at hospitals, etc. I guess I will eventually get used to it, but as mentioned above "I am not a fan of "electric" Mustangs", especially with four doors. 1 1
