Stick a fork in em. Boars Head is done!

Boars Head listeria outbreak now has killed 9 people, with 50 some hospitalized. I don’t know about you, but I love a little mold and insects in my deli items.

Just like Boeing, we need MORE deregulation. Everything is working out so well in the good ole USA!  Can’t even trust the food you pay top dollar for anymore? SMH

High standards really don’t exist anymore for many companies. All profit, with disregard for public safety. From the planes not being properly inspected, to the trains, and their brake systems, and now you can’t help to wonder, what is the next food I purchase at the store, that will poison my family? Pretty sad, to say the least.

All true, but mention it and you inevitably get shouted down by "everything today is way mo better than ever before" types.

Still buying Boars Head Ham in the KC area with no issues. When this all came out it was, and I'm guessing still is, mainly in the eastern seaboard states. The local markets have signs up in their delis mentioning that their meats are not part of the problem. May apply to a local meat distributer in the East. Got some in the refrigerator now and this has me thinking it is about time for a ham sandwich anyway.

Same deal by me and I still buy the brand. I just finished some ham and turkey I was using for sandwiches. The source of the problem was identified and contained. Each BH distributor is privately owned and operated. I knew someone with a route, he paid $250k for it around 1980, he sold it (not sure when) for $400k.

Hopefully the same things will not happen in other geographics. I was reading somewhere that over seven million pounds of food was recalled. I can’t help to think of Listeria when I think of Boars Head. When deregulation loosens the rules on these corporations, who’s to say it can’t or won’t happen again, with this company or any other for that matter?

That explains the weird behavior of the deli worker the other day..... and I'm really trying to stay with my Ignorance Is Bliss experiment which is so corrupted now.  Fry's sells it, I never had a problem.  But now I wonder if the Chinese own it, like they do other brands you thought were American owned.

The Listeria was found only in liverwurst from a single plant in Virginia. They recalled everything processed in that one plant for a certain window of time out of an abundance of caution. I have no idea how many plants they have or the geographic regions that any of them serve.

I don't generally buy Boar's Head because the markets around me don't have it pre-packaged. I don't normally get "sliced to order" at the market that has a deli.

Is this something new?

No.

How many times in the past half decade did we have people getting sick from improperly washed produce like bagged spinach or lettuce?

Not to mention a multitude of various food recalls, such as the JIF peanut butter recall a while back, (just an example of many) and the food poisoning that you risk EVERY TIME you eat out.

I suppose if you want to completely avoid food born illness, you need to do most of your eating at home with food that you've cooked/produced yourself.

If you go take a look at the USDA's "Recalls and Public Health Alerts" website, you'll see that there have been about 40 food recalls or alerts since the first of the year, some of them listeria or E-coli contamination.

Good luck avoiding it folks.

This week it's Boars Head.

Next week it'll be Oscar Mayer.

Mmm mmm good. Just had a fat Boar's Head Black Forest Smoked Ham sandwich on crusty rye with a nutty Kerrygold Irish Swiss cheese, lotsa mayo, a little Coleman's hot English mustard, some fresh cracked black pepper, a dill pickle spear, a scoop of deli "southern style" potato salad...and a Yuengling "traditional lager". Life is fine.  :D

Amazingly, I'm not dead yet. Maybe tomorrow.  ;)

At least you will go out smiling. I could use a few things for sammiches next week. Some places used to have ham-swiss combos on sale, I will have to see if they have anything going on right now.

Yuengling Lager, now you’re talking! The original, oldest brewery is about 40 miles from me.

Boar's Head is family-owned. I was wondering if they'd been acquired by some private equity firm, but that isn't the case. According to Wikipedia, they had major sanitation issues at one of their packaging plants. They were basically cited monthly for a while, but a shut-down order was never issued. Ineffective enforcement should be cause for a major investigation.
