James2 Posted November 14, 2024 Author Posted November 14, 2024 It definitely did not stick, but Iām sure it was user error! I will try better!
mrm Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 This is not clear coat related. The clear did exactly what it was supposed to do, which is stick to the color. There was simply no adhesion between the color and primer. This is achieved one of two ways- mechanically or chemically. Chemically is when the color is applied before the primer is 100% cured and therefore the two "fuse". This is tricky with yellow, as it will require multiple thin coats of paint right before the previous one is fully cured. Or you can create mechanical grip, by roughing up the primer underneath. This is easily achieved by simply sanding it right before painting the color on, with something like 600 or 800 grid.Ā Ā Ā Ā The most common mistake people make is to let the primer cure for days or weeks, then basically polish it super smooth, then let it sit even longer and then spray thin coats that don't affect it. And you have very weak bond between the color and primer. Which is why I sand my primer with 600, then spray a good coat of color and then if necessary sand it with higher grid, before adding more color.Ā 1 1

James2 Posted November 17, 2024 Author Posted November 17, 2024 This mishap was entirely user error. I simply got in a hurry and failed to remove the mask over the white before clear coat. And then in frustration tried to do so too soon before the paint cured. Being yellow I will not try to repair the damage due to the fact, it would be more effort than just painting a new body. Again as stated, lesson learnt! 1
James2 Posted November 29, 2024 Author Posted November 29, 2024 I did manage to paint the backup body for the 57 today. I decanted this old Testors Yellow I found in the paint box. A little clean up and polish it should be fine.Ā 4
bill-e-boy Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 Looking good. And a rescue from you earlier issues. I find that yellow is the hardest paint of all colours to paint. First coat over primer OK but next coats are difficult. Just so hard to see what you are doingĀ

Not sure what I will do about that, if anything.... Thanks for the interest. Edited November 30, 2024 by James2

Phildaupho Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I really like how the 32 Roadster engine looks in your 57 Chev. The supercharger looks very appropriate to this application. Your Testors enamel paint job turned out ultimately very impressive. 1
