What is the best way to strip Testors Xtreame Lacquer.

Recommended Posts

So I painted a 90 Mustang Notchback green and gold with Xtreame Lacquer to make a NH state police car but have decided to make it a California Highway patrol black and white. The black and white needs to be enamel. The lacquer needs to come off. Will a dip in the purple pond work? Or do I need something stronger?

The purple pond (preferably Castrol Super Clean) is worth a try. I find it is hit or miss with lacquer. There is also Easy Off HD oven cleaner (the nasty stuff, not the fresh scent) which has the same active ingredient as the purple stuff, though I find the oven cleaner to be less effective. If that doesn't work, Isopropyl alcohol (91 or 99%) is usually effective on lacquer. The warmer the environment the better they work; I sometimes put my purple pond right in the dehydrator. Scuffing the surface of the paint with coarse sandpaper also helps. One lacquer paint job that would not budge with either of those methods required a one-two day dunk in brake fluid, which worked a treat, but is messier to deal with.

I use Easy Off. There is an odor free one. It still STINKS. I go outside and use it wearing vinyl gloves, Covid paper facemask, and pay attention which way the wind is blowing. The only paint that Purple Power strips are acrylics' and chrome parts.

The paint stripping ingredient in Castrol Super Clean (CSC) and in the original Easy-Off spray is Lye (Sodium Hydroxide).  The odor free Easy-Off does nto have Lye and will not work for stripping paint. CSC is really the best thing to use since it comes as a liquid which does not need to be sprayed (spraying is what contaminates the air with the nasty fumes).

Mike, if you read that post again it states "The odor free Easy-Off does not have Lye and will not work for stripping paint."  Basically what I mentioned that the low-odor Easy-Off does not contain Lye and will not strip paint like the original stinky Easy-Off.

I hope you mean brake fluid, brake cleaner will turn the plastic into a molten puddle of goo.

Of course, I read it you are right No LYE I stripped this one in about 2 hours yesterday. Testors Supreme Clear Laquar over Splash Paint. scratched the body trying to BMF the car. Another Easy Off bath today and some light sanding it will be as good as new.
