Horrorshow Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Does anyone know a technique for tinting clear windshields? It looks real cool on old school gassers.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Using colored clear plastic sheet to replace windows usually produces the best results. It's easy if the "glass" in question is not compound-curved. 2 1
rattle can man Posted January 16 Posted January 16 transparent acrylic paint on the inside? acrylic floor polish tinted with food coloring, (again on the inside)? the reason I say acrylic is it is less likely to affect the clear plastic by hazing/ frosting, etc. it 2 1
Old Buckaroo Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I have seen guys tint aircraft canopies with "future floor polish" (or whatever its called now) with a very light amount of food coloring mixed in. They would dip them and then wick away the extra with a paper towel so it didn't pool up at the bottom. If you got some tire burnt, cracked or extra windshields - I'd experiment with that. 2 1
Straightliner59 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Tinted windshields, other than factory tinting were verboten, for Gassers. And pretty much any other drag car, too. 1
Skip Posted January 17 Posted January 17 That is correct, Banned by both Pre-1972 NHRA and AHRA Rulebooks. What makes the windshield look tinted is the windshield looks tinted in comparison to the other tinted windows. 1
slusher Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I have seen cored sheets at Hobby Lobby all colors! Many cars gassers are coming with tinted glass! 1

Carl, you're right they are called "Lay Film" I think, though I have no real idea that they are supposed to cover light sources to give colored illumination effects. (Makes sense, I think I looked it up once because I had no clue what it was for, that's how I have a slight clue now!) LoL! The Lay film that I have from Hobby Lobby comes in all the Popular 60's-Gasser window colors and clear I'm not digging them out right now, but they are like 0.005 and 0.008" thickness and can be used to do side and back glass pretty easy. 1
Deathgoblin Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I've heard of people using RIT dye to tint clear parts.
